Great Gaddesden v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 09 May 2015 at 1:00pm
St Albans Cricket Club Won By 4 wickets

Match report St Albans IIIs opened their 2015 campaign with a win in a competitive game against Great Gaddesden at their opponent's picturesque ground. Saint's skipper Eames won the toss and due to the dampness of the track had little qualms about bowling first. Excellent opening spells by Hay and U13 bowler Adshead kept GG quiet with Hay picking up two wickets in his excellent opening spell of 2 for 17 in 10 overs. During GG's recovery from 34 for 3 to 94 Tom O'Toole bowled some excellent balls in his 9 over spell of 1 for 43 and once he found his length Rehan chipped in with a couple of wickets. The returning Adshead and evergreen Richard O'Toole finished the GG innings off with figures of 2 and 3 for 17 respectively. GG's final total of 148 was indebted to J Crawley's (no not that one) 45 and P Warren's 23 in their middle order and an unbeaten 21 by C Ambrose (no not that one either) which enabled them to add 38 for their last 3 wickets.

Saints' innings started haltingly with Jamie Regan, another of the U13 contingent and Steve Ferguson falling with only unlucky 13 on the board. Crisp and Jadhav undertook valuable repair work, only for both to fall to the excellent Ambrose (no still not him) each with 26 runs to his name. With Faz Nisar falling quickly, again to Ambrose (3-39 in 10 overs) it was game on with young Tom O'Toole and skipper Eames at the crease and the score at 74 for 5. O'Toole jnr settled quickly and looked in little trouble as GG's skipper, Cheeseman Snr, rung the bowling changes in an effort to put pressure on the Saints' lower order. With O'Toole keeping the scoreboard moving with 1s and 2s and Eames putting most bad balls to the boundary, Saints moved to 135 before O'Toole holed out to mid-wicket with probably his first false stroke, his score of 26 worth a lot more in the context of the game and it was left to skipper Eames to hurry the conclusion with three leg side boundaries in five balls leaving Saints victorious by 4 wickets.

A competitive game played in an excellent spirit by both sides in an extremely pleasant setting is hopefully an auspicious start to the new season.
