St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Great Gaddesden on Sat 11 Jul 2015 at 1:00pm
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 68 runs

Match report In a tightly packed league, this round 10 match brought together two of the four teams at the top of the division 8A ladder, with just four points between these four sides. Saints had the edge over Great Gaddesden in the round one encounter, and now looked to reinforce that in the first of the season's return fixtures.

Eames was pleased to win the toss, with a dry Verulam wicket on offer, and cracks suggesting that it may break up a little before the day was done.

Gaddesden took the early honours however, with a slow wicket forcing the batsmen to create scoring opportunities against an attack of fairly gentle dimensions. Ferguson (37) joined O'Toole junior (40) and the pair added 63 to thoroughly turn the game to the advantage of the home side. With the benefit of this foundation, O'Toole senior then got up to his usual tricks, swinging his way to 71 in a style that caused much irritation to the fielding side, culminating in a series of reverse sweeps and lap shots. Finally Fleming's 42 allowed the skipper to declare with 250 on the board after 50 overs.

Were Great Gaddesden up to the challenge this score offered? If they initially had confident thoughts, they were dispelled when Adshead gave the top order batsmen a torrid time in a terrific opening spell that claimed three wickets. Behind the stumps, Crisp claimed a fine one handed catch from an inside edge to set a high standard in the field. Soon the visitors were 29-5, and their chances of victory were dashed - now the question to be answered was whether Saints could winkle out the remaining five wickets to claim a win.

The lower order Gaddesden batsmen indeed showed some skill and all reached double figures. Indeed it was good to see the visitors continue to play shots rather than try to settle in for a draw, with Eames setting a field with as many as six slips. Still, the wickets fell, O'Neill popping up for three, with fine catches to Regan and then Crisp to bring a conclusion to the match.

A 68 run win - the sixth of the season - lifted Saints beyond Great Gaddesden to second on the ladder, well placed to continue a challenge for promotion.
