Ampthill Town II v St Albans Cricket Club 2XI on Sat 01 Aug 2015 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won

Match report Having ‘successfully’ navigated through leafy Bedfordshire to the ground, St. Albans 2XI were optimistic of securing a third victory on the bounce. Vijender won the toss and elected to bat on what looked like a good batting surface. Kindlen and Ingham set the tone nicely early on – Ingham pulling Ampthill’s opener for two 6’s illustrating that anything short throughout the day would be severely punished. Both Saints openers accumulated well but some tight bowling from opposition spinner, Clark, restricted the scoring well for the home side, even if wickets were hard to come by. Shortly after drinks Ingham gifted Amptill with their first wicket by steering a full toss straight to mid-on to depart for a well-made 46. The platform set by the Saints openers allowed subsequent batsmen to come out with intent. Erasmus and Nicholl advanced the score well, with Nicholl in particular looking in fine fettle. A few quick wickets fell towards the latter end of the innings leave Saints looking like they may fall short of the targeted 250, but late hitting from Nicholl (60) ensured they reached said target in the last over; finishing with 249-7.

Having posted a good total, St. Albans attacked from the first – Carroll in particular looking threatening and beat both the Ampthill openers bats on several occasions in the first few overs. It was Carroll who made the first breakthrough, aided by a good catch by Erasmus at second slip. Ampthill recovered through the middle order, with all making starts, but through some good work in the field, Saints always managed to pick up a wicket just as a partnership was developing. With Ampthill needing just over 60 to win and number 4, Degnan, looking in good touch, Saints skipper Vijender turned to ‘golden-arm’ Nicholl looking for another wicket. Fresh from his heroics with the bat, Nicholl made the key breakthrough by dismissing Degnan, with assistance from a spectacular catch, diving forward at mid-on from Dempsey. With the orders to play out for a draw from the home dressing room, Saints applied the pressure and it was Nicholl again who took the final wicket – for the first time in 96 overs, the ball nipped back off the seam to take the top of off stump and in doing so, gave St. Albans their third win in a row.
