Match report Keen on revenge after a thumping earlier in the year, St Albans II’s hosted Leverstock Green II’s on a spongy, green (standard), Clarence Park deck. Saints lost the toss and were put in, and the decision looked a bad one with Saints having comfortably reached 40 without loss. However, wickets fell relatively steadily as the top order failed to cash in on starts, opener Matt Ingham (24) got a dubious one from the opposition umpire, Sam Kindlen (25) was comprehensively castled, and no. 3 Michael Goodfellow (27) nicked off. Ruan Erasmus top scored in making a steady and well compiled 56, and Saints were bowled out for a slightly below par 160 off the allotted 53 overs. Last man Ben Carroll’s technique (0) made for some comedy value, and reminisced a poor man’s Chris Martin!

Saint’s seamers failed to make early inroads and at 100-1, and subsequently 130-3, the game looked dead and buried as the opposition needed only 30 to win at less than 3 an over, with 7 wickets in the hutch. However, an inspired spell of miserly tweakers from off-spinner Ben Hicks turned the game on its head as the Leverstock Green batsmen preceded to suffer several brain implosions with the victory margin nearing. Hicks ended with 4-29 off his 14 overs, and was well supported by some, as President Peter Mardelly often describes, ‘filth’ from Sam Kindlen, who ended with 3-17 off 7 overs and aptly mopped up Leverstock’s lower order. Erasmus took a couple of key top order wickets and ended with 2-24 off his 5 overs. Leverstock were bowled out for 146, and one or two of their players ended up with the proverbial egg on the face after (rather villagely), shouting ‘village’ and ‘smash the trash’ from the boundary when they thought they had the game in the bag. The game isn’t over until the fat lady sings! That’s 4 wins on the trot for the II’s, who travel to third placed Langleybury next Saturday!
