St Albans Cricket Club 2XI v Hertford III on Sat 22 Aug 2015 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost
Match report
St Albans 2nd XI arrived to glorious sunshine on Saturday, as they played hosts to Hertford 3rd XI. After a small complication involving St Albans only having 10 players (and one of them being a Batchwood-laden Mini Telkman), Hertford won the toss and understandably elected to bat. Hertford began strongly, with a left-handed opener in particular taking a likening to Harvey Scott. A wicket from Vijender was undoubtedly key as St Albans began to reign Hertford back in. Boosted by the arrival of the iconic M. Eames to the field, the probing trio of Vijender (10-4-29-1), Rajani (10-3-27-2) and Telkman (10-3-21-4) began to turn the screw.
Telkman in particular profited from a return to bowling after a brief break, picking up two wickets in his first over back into the attack. One of these was a sharp stumping from the impressive James Rosson, cueing Eammo to note how actually Jimmy was looking like a proper keeper and “not the incompetent buffoon we all know you are!” Credit must go to an astute keeping performance in the searing heat which also featured a leg-side stumping and only amassed one bye.
With Hertford 157-4, an excellent spell of pressure followed to take the score to 164-9, making Harvey Scott’s (highly lauded) prediction of 170 all out at 158-5 look almost pessimistic. However, the last four overs marked a slump in St Albans’ performance, as a key partnership of 20 was formed for the last wicket. Nonetheless, with a strong batting line-up all the way down the order, the bookies would have fancied St Albans to meet their target of 185.
Indeed, it all seemed to be going to plan as a ten ball over was bowled by one Hertford opener, and both Mike Curtis and Michael Goodfellow looked in good knick, before falling for 18 and 25 respectively. Eammo followed in a bizarre fashion, struggling to pick up a full toss and somehow spooning it to square leg. However, with the hosts at 75-3 off 18 overs and batsmen like Rosson down at 8, St Albans were still confident of victory. What followed was a particularly sparse period for St Albans, scoring just 31 off the next 18 overs. Wickets fell as the required rate began to creep higher.
Rosson continued his good form with the bat, making a fluid 25 before being bowled attempting a slog sweep off a returning opening bowling. A lot rested now on Rajani’s shoulder, who batted credibly and was aided by a quick Harvey Scott cameo. It was this partnership that marked the most bizarre event of the match, as Scott went for a baseball style, foot-first dive in a desperate attempt to complete a single. Due to some shoddy scoring, the details will go amiss, but after the dismissals of Scott and Telkman it was down to Rajani and Hall to see St Albans home.
After Hall creamed his first two balls straight to fielders, 9 off 6 was the target. Two singles followed. Hall clunked a leg-side slog for three (Clive Maynard later speculating in the Bunker that it could have been 4), leaving the settled Rajani needing 4 off 3. Unfortunately, it was not to be – a ball keeping low and striking leg-stump – cue jubilation in the homes of Hertford. St Albans would fall 4 short in a frustrating day, leaving many a player wondering what could have been. St Albans will wish to recover from their woes as they make the long trip to table-toppers Sandridge on Saturday.
