Bushey I v St Albans Cricket Club 1XI on Sat 20 Aug 2016 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost By 73 runs

Match report St Albans 1XI travelled to Bushey looking to secure victory, and the 15 points required to ensure promotion.

Losing the toss was the first problem of the day, with the wicket looking dry, it would have been an easy decision to bat first. Bushey's opening batsman set off to a quick start, putting pressure on St Albans opening bowlers, Smith and Vijender. The introduction of Mbeks, and a wicket from Smith slowed progress, with St Albans bowlers keeping the Bushey innings largely under wraps from there. The Bushey innings was constructed around a patient 91 from opener Sharma, who rode his luck against Dan Rosson, but read conditions well on a difficult batting surface, helping Bushey to a score of 177-10. The bowlers were aided by good fielding, resulting in an amazing 5 wickets falling to run outs, including one from Charlie Parkinson playing his first game in the 1st XI. Goddard the pick of the bowlers with 2-42 from his 10, with Smith, Mabuza, and Rosson all bowling with good control.

Bushey's 177 was a competitive total on a below par surface, but St Albans went in to the chase confident of overturning the opponents score. Unfortunately the innings got off to a poor start with Jonny Hall falling LBW in the first over, bringing skipper Howeson to the crease. Poor judgement from the skipper attempting to pull a short delivery on a wicket with clear indifferent bounce resulted in him being bowled. Wickets continued to fall at frequent intervals with Mbeks falling victim to a ball that appeared to stop in the pitch, and Goddard have looked in good form, was bowled by a half track delivery that ended up a "slower ball bouncer" courtesy of the surface. A poor pitch but some poor shot selection contributed to our demise.

The only batsman that emerged with any credit from the innings was Michael Goodfellow who looked in fine form, watchful and composed, punishing any overpitched bowling with aplomb. Bushey's bowlers grew in confidence and producing continued good bowling, Khan dismissing both new recruit Charlie Parkinson, and Phil Caley with good deliveries. St Albans were reeling at 68-9 when rain finally forced players off the pitch. Returning to the pitch after a 25 minute break, chasing an unlikely 71 runs from 11 overs to secure victory with 1 wicket remaining. Goodfellow was the last man to fall chasing the improbably high run rate.

A very disappointing day at the office, a good to toss to win for the opposition definitely, but we were comprehensively outplayed on the day.
