Old Elizabethans II v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 21 May 2016 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 32 runs
Match report
Saints IIIs got off the mark for the season with an excellent all-round win at Old Elizabethans.
With rain threatening, and League rules for rain affected fixtures favouring the side batting second, it was no surprise to be asked to bat first. After an early wicket, Karunanayake and the clean-hitting Ahmed (35) compiled a half-century partnership. With a second consecutive 50 stand - Karunanayake (28) and Crisp (27) this time - Saints were on top and with a decent run rate. A cluster of wickets tightened the game up, Old Elizabethans youngster Shah keeping things in check. But Melling and Hay offered useful contributions, and Plant, on debut, made the most of two early chances with 34 not out. For the first time in the season, Saints had batted their 50 overs out, and so tallied up 197, a decent target.
Perhaps with the overcast conditions in mind, Old Elizabethans started quickly, and marched to 56 in the first ten overs, light drizzle somewhat disadvantaging the St Albans bowlers. Seeking a turn around, the skipper brought himself on, and amongst a first over replete with poor deliveries, the one straight one got through Richardson's defences. A second wicket followed, and Saints sensed a way back in to the match. Remarkably, Walker took the first six wickets, though not all from good deliveries, invoking memories of a former clubman's fortuitous success from long hops. At the other end, Rahman had a good thing going, mixing things up to keep the batsmen honest. Ahmed (2/19) joined the fray and took a wicket with his first delivery. Injured OE's keeper Parker found the middle of the bat to raise opposition hopes with 40, and even the last wicket threatened to take the game away from Saints before Plant's fine catch diving forward completed victory. Walker had finished with the sublime figures of 10/3/24/6, but this was a great effort all round, important catches taken throughout, none more so than Rahman's running effort.
The main scoreboard, its shelter abandoned by the scorers once the drizzle halted, had been left showing the score at 74-1 after 14 overs, reflecting how the game had turned from that point. The skipper was rightly pleased with the team's unified effort and committed contributions, with everyone sharing in a fine victory.
