Northwood Town II v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 04 Jun 2016 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 30 runs

Match report In a week when availabilty issues tested the selection committee's resolve and stretched resources across the club, the IIIs will take more from this game than the result, a loss at Northwood Town, suggests.

Bowling first, Little found his poise quickly and nabbed an early wicket, while Saunders worked his way into a rhythym, bowling up the hill. With Haji batting well, the second wicket didn't fall until the 28th over. With Button, Walker and Fleming putting a clamp on the runs, Saints felt in control with the score on 120 after 40 overs.

Northwood Town had judged their approach well, though, and Malik and Haji (88 not out)struck nearly 50 runs in less than five overs at the end of the innings. With a little fortune, and some cheeky running that frustrated Saints into some foolish fielding lapses, they stole the initiative at the end, undermining a solid effort in the field. Walker and Ahmed finished with two wickets each.

A tally of 192 was more than the skipper had hoped his undermanned line up would have to chase. Crisp and Ferguson started with resolve against some containing bowling, acknowledging the slow outfield in their shot selection. Unfortunately both departed with 22 to their name, and a succession of wickets fell to leave Saints at 87-7 after 35 overs.

Little, perhaps seeking to justify his number 7 position in the batting order, had started well by this point. Nick Ralfe showed glimpses of a bright future with some nifty batting, and Walker offered a cameo 21 in an enterprising partnership of 44 that saw the opposition start to question themselves. Little raised his half century and suddenly we were three big overs from victory, with fieldsmen despatched to all parts. Alas, a desperate second run ended Little's agricultural knock at 51, and so ended the match.

A match played in good spirit concluded with both teams pleased - Northwood Town had their first win of the season, and Saints had offered all round commitment to bring a satisfying feeling despite falling short. Well done all.
