St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Reed III on Sat 11 Jun 2016 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 135 runs

Match report A terrific team batting effort was followed by a superb bowling performance from Ash Dean to give Saints a victory over Reed III on a spicy track at the SLCG.

With heavy clouds looming and a wicket that was holding some water, the opposition were left with the difficult decision of what to do first - and chose to bowl.

Even as the players entered the field, the drizzle began. A steady start was matched by steadily increasing rain that eventually forced play to pause briefly, the life in the track already noted. Dean and Ahmed found their feet to add 61 for the second wicket, before the two fell in quick succession. The score drifted to 104-5 in the 34th over, at which point Crisp and Saunders added 34. The skipper's earnest instructions were to bat out the 53 overs, and courtesy of his own bat (24 not out, including a sumptuous cover drive) and Saunders (a well worked 37 not out), a tally of 202 was raised, and a 52 over declaration made.

The 200+ total reflected a well-paced innings, set up by some diligent top order batting, and a good team effort. The pitch was certainly offering something to the bowlers - with the season now in the win-draw-loss format, the onus was on the bowlers to bowl out the opposition in these conditions.

A first wicket fell to Hay at 26, and then a glut of dismissals with the score on 38 set Saints to victory. Key to this were consecutive wickets at the end of Dean's third over, followed immediately by Hay's second wicket - a team hattrick. Dean then returned for his fourth over, on a hattrick, and his straight one beat the bat and drew an LBW verdict from the umpire to bring much celebratory high-fiving. Reed were suddenly 38-5.

The gremlins in the pitch were making their presence felt, too, Moody forced into an ungainly evasion that left his bat knocking off a bail. Dean continued on his way, pushing himself into a twelfth over of off-stump bowling at good pace. The tail was duly rolled over, Reed all for 67 in fewer than 30 overs, Dean doing all of the damage. His figures of 11.5/2/21/8 both a personal best and the best for a Saints IIIs player in many years, a magnificent performance.

The skipper expressed his pleasure at such a fine victory, and the team returned to the bar with optimism after three wins from four.
