St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v President XI on Sun 28 Aug 2016 at TBC
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 23 runs
Match report
The Annual Club President's day game took place at Clarence Park against our President Peter Mardle's XI. A President's XI including numerous ex St Albans players alongside Zimbabwe international Tino Mawoyo. As is customary on such occasions, the President's XI batted first.
Andrew 'Shrek' Jones and Ian McKinlay opening the innings looked as if they had not been way from the game, with some good early timing. Andrew Jones having survived a close LBW was caught an over later for four, a solitary 4 runs from the bowling of Jamie Telkman. Macca follwed shortly stumped by St Albans overseas Mbeks, off the bowling of Uttam Vijender. This brought Nav and Tino together who compiled a strong partnership of 96. Tino played a beautiful innings, making batting look easy but fell for 70 to the left arm spin of Mark Telkman, with Nav following shortly after for a patient 27. Iain 'JD' Curtis played some lovely shots reminiscent of his time as a 1st XI batsman, before surprising nobody and sadly falling injured, a bicep tendon injury forcing him to retire hurt for 17. This brought St Albans skipper Matt Howeson to the crease with Simon White.
The threat of showers had somehow been avoided up until this point, with torrential rain skirting Clarence Park all afternoon - it looked as if someone was watching out for us. Unfortunately with the rain becoming harder and the light poor the sides were forced to leave the field.
Thankfully only a brief intermission was required. The President's XI returning to the field required some quick runs, Matt Howeson, uncharacteristically playing some shots, was out for 16. This left Guy Black and Simon White at the crease, Simon playing some fantastic shots, with a couple of particularly large blows over long on, to dominate the bowling. His 50 was reached in the last over of the President's innings, and a challenging total of 230 was on the board.
A fabulous tea followed, with Pate and Melba toast, followed by a main course of Salmon. A generous Eton Mess pudding, and plenty of wine ensured everyone went out to field an hour and half later with full stomachs, and ready for some free flowing cricket.
The Presidents XI opened with Ashish Dean and Simon White, whilst Adam Hounslow and Mbeks opened the innings for the Club XI. Ashish bowled a good spell with little reward. Mbeks appeared to be in a real hurry, jogging down the pitch to hit the first 2 deliveries for 4. He continued in the same fashion bringing up a quick 45, before succumbing to the part time off spin of his old friend Tino Mawoyo, who was jubilant to take this wicket in particular. A cleverly engineered bowling change from skipper Guy Black had paid dividends.
The club's middle order found going hard as Andy Saunders bowled a miserly spell, with consistent swing, and no shortage of control; scoring runs was difficult. As a result first Adam Hounslow and then Mark Telkman were caught off Andy's bowling, Andy finishing with excellent figures of 2-28 from his 8 overs. Guy Black continued the theme with a nagging line and length, and the ball moving away from the right hander, he picked up 2-9 from his 4. Whilst the St Albans middle order had been failing, number 3 James Rosson had been quietly accumulating runs, putting away the odd bad ball with aplomb, to contribute a fine innings of 79, the top score of the day. Dom Watkins provided some late assistance scoring 24, punishing the occasional loose full toss from Ciaran Walsh who had bowled well on the whole.
It was left to Jack Ypey to finish the day in the President's XI favour with a good spell of bowling in the early evening gloom. Jack - proving that full and straight at the death never goes out of fashion - picked up three wickets, all bowled, at the end.
This was a great day of cricket, with good food and wine, and the company of many old friends of the club. Thanks to all who were involved.
