Match report Grey skies matched an overall grey performance from the first team as their return to division 2A began with a 41 run loss at Preston.

Set 211 to win, the chase faded within the first 20 overs with Saints 7 down for 71. Simon White fell for 12, after a couple of well played boundaries, the first of 4 wickets for Waters. Chanda, debutant Jamie Regan and Howeson fell soon after with more cautious Hounslow falling to his first attacking shot. Jacob Winfield, pushed up to 7, and Phil Caley, who hit 3 fours in a short stay, left Max Capaldi and Jonny Hall to repair the damage. They put on 41 in 6 overs before the former was caught behind. Mike Grossett, also making his debut, joined Hall with the rate under 4 an over. A period of 12 overs produced only 10 runs damaged the chances of a win. When Hall was out for 48 the rate was over 10.

Earlier, after the hosts won the toss, an innings in three parts of 210-6 set a reasonable target. Good bowling but little luck saw Preston reach 61 before White's first ball produced a wicket. A couple more plus one for Rosson left the hosts rebuilding at 77-4. Stand in skipper Hill attacked with a run a ball 84 not out with good support from Plumb. White returned to pick up 5 for 38, supported well by Rosson and Grossett.

Let down by a poor batting display and hindered by Beks Mabuza awaiting clearance to return to the club but with some promise for the rest of the season.
