St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 80 runs

Match report After a productive pre-season - fund-raising, refurbishment, practice and recruitment - May 6th saw the season's first Herts League fixtures, the beginning of the real stuff.

The 3s commenced at Verulam School, once more in division 8A, facing newly promoted Flitwick IIIs.

Saints won the toss, and the skipper elected to field first, counting on his bowlers to keep the opposition to a manageable score. Everdell and Alfie Button bowled lively opening spells, the latter unlucky not to snare the wicket of Summerfield, in a period of the game where Saints generally felt a little unfortunate. Continuing with the youthful theme, Dan Baylis and Joe Button (2 wickets) took over, and the run rate was cut through their accuracy. That theme continued as Walker and newcomer Wyldes took over.

35 overs in, Flitwick had been slowed to 3 an over, but with just 3 wickets down, and Summerfield well set, they were now able to lift the rate on a true wicket. St Albans continued to work hard in the field, and with the ball, but Summerfield's stellar 115 led his team to 211 after 50 overs. Wyldes employed a few tricks to nab 4/48 on his club debut. Baylis deserved more than his single wicket, too.

While the consensus was that this was a gettable target, the skipper felt a batsman short of confidence in a successful result. So it proved. In the face of solid rather than spectacular bowling, batsmen found ways of getting out, without doing much wrong. Thomas, shaking off the chill in the air better than most, showed his clean striking to hit 45, while Everdell struck cleanly to finish on an undefeated 32.

A margin of 80 runs reflected somewhat harshly on the team's efforts. On another day this may have been so much different.

Next up, a trip to Datchworth. There are plenty of reasons to anticipate a much better result.
