Match report The thirds traveled to Datchworth for the second round of matches, the venue a picturesque village green setting, complete with road running inside the boundary at its western perimeter.

The day's key question was whether another makeshift top order could answer the need for runs. Winning the toss put that to the test immediately, and early on Watkins and Gemmill (an assured 20 on league debut) looked comfortable. But both were out in a short space of time, and soon four wickets were down. Andy Knill-Jones (37) rallied his partners and the score doubled, before another clutter of wickets brought a swift end to the innings. Some brainless batting - poor shot selection and ill-advised running between wickets - were the hallmarks of a disappointing 108, clearly under par on a good wicket.

What could the bowlers muster? Thrown the new ball, Alfie Button produced a gem first up, but could only watch horrified as the ball flew to the skipper at second slip - and grassed the chance. This fired up Saints though: Milnes took a wicket with his first delivery at the other end, and Button was able to nab one himself, aided by a great catch by Gemmill at point. 2 wickets without a run on the board; was the game swinging back the other way? While Button beat the bat with good pace and accurate lines, and Milnes' swing troubled the batsmen, wickets proved elusive. Needing wickets, the skipper rotated his bowlers through short spells after that, but Webb and opposition skipper Bonser were comfortable in taking the home team to victory. Alfie Button the standout bowler for Saints, deserving better than his one wicket.

Reflecting on the loss, there was no hiding behind another poor batting performance. The runs are going to have to start flowing for the 3s to chalk up wins rather than deflating defeats.
