Harpenden IV v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 26 Aug 2017 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 10 wickets
Match report
The IIIs assured themselves of another year in division 8A with a resounding victory over local rivals Harpenden.
Saints arrived at St Georges School knowing that relegation was still a possibility, and showed their intent with a warm-up. The hosts, on the other hand, were more muted in their preparations, perhaps as, amongst all of the club's sides, Harpenden's IVs were left with nothing to play for.
Having being asked to field first, Telkman and Baylis took the new ball. Baylis bowled with good pace to nip out the first wicket, while Telkman's good lines deserved at least something in the wickets column.
After a tight opening, Murphy, the team's leading wicket taker, was introduced to the attack, and soon added to has season's tally, to quell the hosts' threat. Harpenden looked like a much lesser combination than they'd put out against Saints earlier in the season, and opportunist Murphy made the most to grab four wickets with his teasing off-spinners. Of note was a comical moment when Murphy, unhappy with his release, loudly bemoaned his delivery even as the ball travelled to the batsman, only to see it outfox the charging batsman and yield a stumping.
With a youthful feel to the XI, the fielding was at a good standard - keeping, catching, ground fielding - was slick and purposeful, and importantly supported the bowlers. Not wanting to let things slip, the skipper brought on Hay and Hicks. Finally unleashed, the pair each grabbed two wickets, and the Harpenden innings was brought to a close with the total a meagre 95.
Taking tea was thus a relaxing occasion, and Rudlin and Knill-Jones were sent out to start the chase for victory. For Harpenden, Watts and Taylor offered some early challenges to the batsmen, but poor deliveries were pounced on with certainty, and so the score kept ticking over, aided by a generous sprinkling of extras.
Having done the hard early work, the openers were able to cash in as Harpenden's ambition slipped. From patient beginnings, Rudlin (41 off 71, with 10 4s) and Knill-Jones (35 off 47), picked up the pace and carried Saints all the way to victory, with a very fine partnership of 97.
So Saints finished with a thoroughly deserved victory, by the unusual margin of 10 wickets. While the opposition were clearly not at their best, this was a very professional team performance, to claim the double over Harpenden.
Of course, the thirty points for victory meant that the IIIs tally was safely ahead of the teams below them, averting any chance of an unwarranted relegation.
With two strong results on the bounce, Saints will look to finish strongly in the final fixture.
