St Albans Cricket Club 4XI v Mill Hill Village III on Sat 03 Jun 2017 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 9 runs
Match report
St Albans IV failed to capitalise on their early initiative as they fell just short chasing Mill Hill Village III's first innings total in a game that ebbed and flowed throughout.
After winning the toss and electing to field on a sunny afternoon at Sandpit Lane, St Albans opening bowlers Hay and Roseman gave Mill Hill's batsmen a thorough examination, bowling with good pace and accuracy. Both were soon rewarded, with Hay picking up the wicket of Dias and Roseman the wicket of Thompson, both caught behind by the safe gloves of Thomas. Roseman (2-24) added another, Salahudeen trapped LBW, before he was replaced by Kumar, who continued to keep things tight. Sheridan was soon bowled, deceived by Kumar's wrong 'un, while Hay (2-25) continued the good work from the other end, bagging Dulkernain in an impressive 8 over spell. When Khan was caught off the bowling of Kumar (2-36), Mill Hill were 6 down with only 70 on the board and St Albans sensed an opportunity to wrap up the innings quickly. Alas, it was not to be and after a brief drinks break, St Albans let the initiative slip as Leggett and Mahalingam accumulated runs steadily, aided by a plethora of extras. Sasi (2-26) removed first Mahalingam bowled then Smith to a sharp catch in the slips by Rosson to revive St Albans hopes, but some careless drops meant that despite wickets for Kanchwala (1-20) and Islam (1-17), Mill Hill reached 171, although no one seemed quite sure how.
St Albans opening pair of Thomas and Islam made a cautious start in the face of some tight bowling from Khan and Dias, with only 12 runs coming off the first 5 overs. However, the runs started to flow with the introduction of Smith's bowling and the score had moved on to 33 by the time Thomas departed for 9 in the 10th over. Patel batted patiently for his 10 while Islam at the other end showed uncharacteristic restraint, defending the good balls but punishing the bad. By the drinks break, St Albans were well set at 84-2, and Islam started to cut loose, reaching his 50 in short order, the highlight being a huge six over square leg. When he eventually perished, LBW for 60, the run rate slowed with just 35 runs coming in the next 10 overs and the wickets of Webber (1), Sasi (1) and Kanchwala (24) all falling. The required rate was now creeping up towards 6 an over, but some sharp running and lusty blows from Rosson kept saints in touch, despite the demise of Hay and Roseman. When Shepstone fell in the 36th over, 36 runs were still needed from 25 balls with the last pair at the crease. Rosson collected 16 runs off the 38th over, leaving 15 required from 8. A further 5 runs from the first four balls of the 39th over left 10 required from 8 balls, but when Kumar unluckily deflected the ball on to his stumps, the game was up, St Albans falling an agonising 9 runs short.
