St Albans Cricket Club 4XI v Shenley Village IV on Sat 29 Jul 2017 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost on net run rate
Match report
St Albans 4XI were left to rue their dropped catches as they lost to Shenley Village 4XI on net run rate in a rain affected match.
With drizzle in the air and a wicket that was still drying after the overnight rain, it was no surprise when Saints were put into bat after losing the toss. Further heavy rain was forecast although the timing was uncertain, so the opening pair of Nisar and Loe knew the importance of batting with discipline. So it proved as they accumulated just 22 runs in the first 10 overs and 54 runs by the drinks break. However, with no wickets down and conditions improving, the platform was set to accelerate the score. Once play resumed, the run rate immediately increased, as both batsman put pressure on the bowling and fielders by rotating the strike and dispating the bad balls. The pair added another 50 runs in the next 9 overs, Nisar reaching his half century and the pair their hundred partnership shortly before Loe departed in the 30th over, bowled for 32 with the score on 104. That brought Khan to the crease and he set about Shenley's bowling attack, scoring freely on both side of the wicket while Nisar continued to accumulate at the other end. Khan reached his 50 in quick time and by the time the last ball was bowled, Saints had added another 100 runs in 10 overs, finishing on an imposing 206-1. A target of 207 felt well above par considering the conditions and the forecast - the only question was could they get in the 20 overs required to constitute a game.
The rain returned during the tea break and was an ever present feature of the second innings. Starting in light drizzle, Tinkler took two wickets in his first over making the most of some prodigious swing and Saints sensed an opening. However, Shenley's number 3 and 4 steadied the ship and started to accumulate quick runs with some clean hitting from Barrie in particular rapidly getting them ahead of the required run rate as Saints tried to rattle through the first 20 overs. Two further wickets fell before that point was reached, but Barrie was also dropped twice as he continued to score freely, reaching a quickfire 50 that kept Shenley ahead on run rate and put them in the ascendancy. With the rain intensifying and the pitch deteriorating, both teams manfully continued to play but Saints bowlers struggled to gain any sort of control with the ball and the runs continue to flow. The introduction of Ashton yielded two further wickets and a run out, but with Barrie dropped twice more on his way to his century, it was clear that Saints' focus needed to be on picking up wickets at the other end. Conditions got increasingly difficult for both the batsmen and bowlers and, as Ellis picked up the 8th wicket in his first over with the score 171, the decision was made to leave the field. That proved to be the final action of the game and Shenley picked up the win by virtue of a superior run rate, although Saints could console themselves with a useful 17 bonus points.
