St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 6 runs

Match report St Albans found themselves on the wrong end of a Chess Valley classic as they suffered an 8-run loss to Winchmore Hill. St Albans were put into the field first up, and the first half of the innings did not go to plan. A combination of inconsistent bowling and powerful batting saw Winchmore Hill get off to a flyer. The opening batsman (and overseas) brought up his fifty within 10 overs, and continued to score quickly before being dismissed shortly after drinks for a very well made 126. Other Winchmore Hill batsman played positively, seeing the 200 being brought up before the 30th over. However, excellent bowling from Christian Hay and Adam Murphy stemmed the flow of runs. The introduction of Chess Valley veteran Jamie Telkman helped further the comeback, taking a hat trick. Winchmore Hill were bowled out for 270, which was much better than it once looked. It should also be noted that only 3 extras were given away.

Opener Murray was dismissed early on in chase, but sensible batting from Ashish Dean and Andy Knill-Jones saw St Albans reach 45 before the latter was run out. The introduction of Mbeks Mabuza saw an increase in the run rate, and with both Dean (73) and Mbeks passing 50, St Albans looked like they might complete an unlikely victory, but the dismissal of Mbeks (54) proved costly, and rate started to clime once more. Mike Grossett (45*) and Syed Kibria (31) kept the rate at just above 10-an-over, and almost pulled off a fantastic win for the Sunday 1XI, but good death bowling meant that St Albans fell 9 runs short of their target.

An excellent effort after a dismal start to the game, but St Albans were left kicking themselves as too many dot balls ultimately cost them what would have been a fantastic victory.
