Priory Park CC v St Albans Cricket Club 5XI on Sat 15 Jul 2017 at 1pm
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets

Match report St Albans CC Club XI travelled to Cavendish Recreation Ground in Eastcote to face Priory Park CC in a friendly 40:40 fixture.

After the start was delayed for 30 minutes due to persistent drizzle and the late arrival of a few of the St Albans players, Saints lost the toss and were put into bat on a damp wicket. The first few overs proved testing with some balls barely getting off the floor while others got exaggerated bounce, but openers Thomas and Still batted carefully and put away the bad balls to get Saints off to a good start. However, before 40 runs were on the board Thomas was adjudged LBW for 13, Patel was bowled without scoring and Still unluckily deflected the ball on to his stumps for 15. When Rush was bowled for 4 and Kanchwala was pinned plumb in front for 7, Saints were in trouble at 47-5, but a steady partnership between the watchful Loe and Williams helped to get the innings back on track. After Loe was bowled for 29 and Williams caught for 15, the focus became batting out the overs, but despite cameos from Webber (7) and P Melling (10), Saints were bowled out for just 115 with the first ball of the 39th over.

With a total well below par, Saints needed to make early inroads into the Priory Park batting line-up. However, despite tight opening spells from A Melling (0-12) and William (0-16), the few chances given failed to go to hand and Priory Park made an assured start. The introduction of Still and Baksa (0-34) threatened to bring a much needed breakthrough, but again a number of half-chances were missed and Saints spirits began to drop. Still (1-17) did eventually snare opener Vijay LBW, but by then well over half the target had been knocked off. Patel (2-25) bowled an excellent spell to keep the pressure on and was rewarded with two wickets including the other opener, Sabs, caught for 56, while Webber picked up the fourth wicket at the other end. However, a quick flurry of 6's and 4's saw Priory Park cruise to victory with 11 overs to spare.

Ultimately, Saints were beaten by the better team, although they also got the worst of the conditions, with the pitch getting easier to bat on as the day went on.
