Old Cholmeleians II v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 04 Aug 2018 at 1pm
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 137 runs
Match report
Match Report 04.08.2018
Usually we start at the beginning and finish at the end. But this time let's start by stating that the 3s took victory in this fixture, following up their successful defence of 118 the previous week with a commanding victory over Old Cholmeleians.
Victory was founded on the 3s’ highest tally of the season, all of 236, achieved after the skipper won the toss.
The first two pairs added 21 each (already enough to equal Saints horror show in May against the same opposition), after which Knill-Jones and Parkinson joined forces, and really gave the innings some momentum with a partnership of 56, watched by the approving eyes of club president, Peter Mardle. HKJ showed his ability with some fine shots before falling for an even half century. West, too, struck the ball well for 26, with the score at 137/4 after 30 overs upon his dismissal. Parkinson had now settled in well and expanded his repertoire to move to an excellent 54 - just what the skipper wanted.
There were further valuable contributions from Islam (24) and Ralfe (22 not out), plus a generous serving of extras as the total reached 236 all out in the 46th over. Perhaps the finish had been a little anaemic but this was comfortably the IIIs best tally of the season, with the key scores all from the younger brigade.
A dry outfield offered full value for strokes even if the wicket was occasionally keeping low, and the skipper hoped that Saints would put in a better fielding effort than their languid opposition. Wickets, of course, would be crucial.
Happily, Price continued with her knack of taking early wickets, to take two victims. Opening bat Gibberd was striking the ball well, and finding the gaps and so Old Cholms were well in touch with the run rate. At this point, the skipper was able to bring the boringly reliable Winfield into the attack, and the runs dried up with his immaculate line and length. At the other end Islam, struggling for a good line at first, found his way through Van den Broek’s defence, to create an opening - 3/86.
Winfield’s persistence was then rewarded with the wicket of Gibberd, a terrific caught and bowled taken low to the ground. The vital wicket was taken now, exposing the soft underbelly of the host’s batting. What followed was something of a procession as wickets fell almost as frequently as runs were scored. Over the course of 14 overs, just 14 runs were scored as Old Cholms collapsed from 2/86 to 98 all out.
Islam finished with 2/13, Ralfe snuck in with 2/0 but the pick of the bowlers was Winfield who completed his 10 overs for a tally of 4/17.
Numerous contributions from the batsmen, disciplined bowling, a near faultless display in the field and 30 points for a win - what more could a skipper ask for?
A note of gratitude, too, for the friendly hosts, and their gracious delivery of cold drinks to the changing room at the conclusion of the match.
Two wins on the bounce now, with an important match against fellow cellar-dweller Wheathampstead to follow next Saturday. Even with the Herts League announcement that just one team will be relegated from Division 8A this season, there is plenty more cricket to be played to avoid that distinction If the IIIs can put together a performance like this one, they will surely finish the season strongly.
