St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Ware I on Sat 18 Aug 2018 at 1pm
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 54 runs

Match report Saints Threes hosted Ware in this round 16 fixture, seeking to continue their good run of results against an opponent in the promotion spots.

Recent rains had turned the Verulam School Playing Fields into a lush green, while the wicket was a touch wet, so the visiting skipper unsurprisingly chose to bowl first upon winning the toss. Ware’s teamsheet revealed a surprise, too, as they were only able to field ten men, unexpected for a team riding high in the League.

On the back of three victories, St Albans had the luxury of fielding the same top four. After an early wicket, Ferguson and Khan built steadily against a bowling attack that was generally bowling too short; only the sluggish nature of the deck kept the scoring at bay. Ferguson, in good touch, fell for 18, having been adjudicated as LBW, with the total on 67, and Khan fell for a well made 31 shortly after. Wyldes (30) arrived and started with a blaze of glory, but was the victim of a shooter. Naveed found his rhythm, too, punishing anything straying to leg.

However both Nav - after striking 34 - and West were out with the total on 7/165, and Saints threatened to fall short of a par score, with Dinnes bowling well for the visitors. But with a little luck, Moksy (17), Walker (22) and Murphy (13 not out) took Saints to a more useful total, batting out 50 overs for once. A total of 227 with a highest individual score of just 34 shows how much of a team effort this was. This was not a wicket where batsmen would ever feel really in.

Ware made an aggressive start with the bat, before the spin twins, Murphy (1/20) and Kumar, both took wickets, having slowed progress. McCurdie and Reid were then united and played with selective aggression, Ware’s score marching forward at a good rate, with a tally of 2/97 at the halfway stage, and the wicket improving.

McCurdie had, however, suffered a muscle strain on the eve of the drinks break, and returned with a runner. He was clearly hampered by the injury, and Kumar pushed one through a little quicker which was hit straight to cover. Kumar, who finished with 3/37, then claimed another victim, and the momentum was back with Saints.

The dangerous Reid was still hitting hard, but having reached his half century, looked a little weary as he lifted one to point, the catch well taken by Moksudul. That seemed the fatal blow to Ware’s hopes, and Walker (3/42) and Khan (2/18) cleaned up the tail to see Saints finish as comfortable winners. As with the batting, this was a team effort in the field.

With just two fixtures remaining, the IIIs still need 8 points to be sure of avoiding relegation, even as they have risen to fifth in the table. Next up are ladder leaders Greenwood Park - after four victories in a row, can Saints dare to dream of knocking them off their perch?
