Match report The league season kicked off with a trip to the building site which is Hitchin Cricket Club as it goes through its redevelopment. On arriving on a hot day the toss was won and St Albans opted to bat first.

Both White and Chanda came and went early before a steadying partnership between Hounslow (21) and Capaldi (26). Hounslow played a patient knock but put away each bad ball received before departing to a diving catch behind the stumps. The next over saw Capaldi depart to a mistimed drive and some rebuilding needed.

The next passage of play saw some good running between the wickets as Winfield (25) and Wyles (31) started to inject some momentum into the St Albans innings. They both started cutting loose against the Hitchin spinners with deft sweeps from Wyles and the power hitting of Winfield before perishing trying to up the run rate. This lead to a somewhat all too familiar St Albans collapse as 146 all out was mustered where perhaps a score of 180+ was something which was achievable with 15 overs to go.

Knowing that early wickets was St Albans let Hitchin get off to a flyer as length were missed and the ball travelled to the boundary. White (2-45) ran in hard up the hill and had two lbw appeals upheld to keep St Albans in the game. At the other end Foster (1-18) was as miserly as normal and should have had more wickets if Chanda had decided to use his hands and not his cap to catch the ball…

The innings was held together by the Hitchin number 4 who made an unbeaten 73 which was undoubtedly the difference between the teams as St Albans succumbed to a 5 wicket defeat.

Next week sees the first home game of the season with a first league win still on the line.
