St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 114 runs

Match report With a much changed side, with 3 new faces in Oliver Coulman, Harvey Scott, and Michael Martin all making their 1XI debut, St Albans 1XI hosted Berkhamsted at Clarence Park on Saturday. Preparation for the game was far from ideal, with 3 arriving late for various reasons, it was a poor start to the day, and not a great introduction for our new players. This continued when we lost toss on the second time of asking, after the the Berko captain, seemingly dumbfounded by the skipper's tossing techique forgot to call first time, St Albans were asked to field first.

Winfield and White took the new ball, in between Wides from Winfield both threatened the outside edge and found movement. The initial break through came from White inducing a lose drive from the Berkhamsted opening bat, with a good one handed catch taken low to his left by Howeson at slip. Winfield bowled with good pace and consistently looked threatening, his efforts were rewarded when a lose ball was chopped on to the stumps. With Berkhamsted soon 4 down, courtesy of a further wicket for White and 1 for Vijender, with less than 70 on the board St Albans felt in a strong position. A partnership between the oppostion skipper and keeper ensued to bring them right back into the game. Howeson forced to turn to his occasional right arm trundle, proved just why it is so occasional, demonstrating a clear case of "the yips", however amidst this somehow claimed the wicket of the opposition skipper. Berko built their innings around two strong partnerships both involving their keeper, who scored a good 60, supported by their overseas batting at number 9, and finishing 50 not out. The main bowlers all put in good stints with the ball, bowling with good control, however in truth St Albans really missed their spin duo of Foster and Capaldi on a pitch that proved to take spin. A score of 233-9 was probably slightly above par, but not by that much.

Opening the innings was new boy Oliver Coulman, with Simon White. A solid opening partnership from the pair brought 50 up before White fell victim to Foster for 24, unfortunately from there wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. The only real bright light in the batting card being Oliver Coulman's 40, who playing his first game for the club demonstrated a composure sadly lacking from most of the other St Albans batsman. After that only Jacob and Utti managing to make it into double figures. All in all a day to forget for St Albans, who travel to Watford Town next week, hoping for a turnaround in fortunes.
