St Albans Cricket Club 2XI v Holtwhites Trinbis II on Sat 28 Jul 2018 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 5 runs
Match report
St. Albans 2s hosted second-placed Holtwhites Trinibis at a windswept Clarence Park, knowing that a win would lift them above their opposition into the promotion places as they headed into the latter stages of the season.
Saints’ skipper Rajani won the toss and elected to field first. Credit most go to Murray who stepped in to take up wicket-keeping duties after Rosson was late due to a combination Bumble-related activities and Thameslinks’ continued efforts to p*** off each and every single one of their customers.
The Saints openers started well with both Dean and Telkman extracting lateral movement both in the air and off the wicket – beating the bat on numerous occasions. Following a couple of streaky boundaries, Dean secured the opening breakthrough, dismissing Burgess LBW for 12. Telkman soon joined the party, bowling Kansara (9) through the gate to leave Holtwhites 51-2 off 12 overs.
What followed can best be described as a period of consolidation for the visitors, with only 9 runs being scored of the next 13 overs delivered by Rajani (10-4-26-1) and Seagrave (10-0-27-0) in the period leading up to the drinks break. Both former St. Albans player, Abbas, and Tarling seemed content to block both good and bad balls alike. Though on the plus side, the St. Albans over-rate benefitted enormously which, given the previous weeks 4-hour marathon, was welcomed by the hosts.
Post-drinks, the Holtwhites batsman came out with a little more vigour, Sailing in particular signaled his intent by moo-ing his first ball for 4 over cow corner. Despite this, Saints continued to chip away at the opposition’s line-up, regular wickets stemming what little momentum Holtwhites were able to muster. Highlights included a direct hit run-out from Wyldes (cunningly hiding his gun arm for the previous 40 overs), 3 catches in 2 overs for the returning Goodfellow (aided by expert field placing from the skipper), and Button’s exhibition of how to bowl to the tail yielding deserved figures of 4-20 (yes, the full toss is still a good ball).
An all-round excellent bowling and fielding performance saw Saints bowl out Holtwhites for an under-par 148 in just 42 overs.
Murray and Rudlin opened the batting for St. Albans and Murray started in typically belligerent fashion before falling to Weston for 18. Rudlin (12) and Seagrave (2) were pinned down by some accurate bowling from Holtwhites, who were aided by some variable bounce from the Clarence Park pitch that had rapidly begun to deteriorate in the afternoon sun.
Seagrave fell trying to break the shackles after an uncharacteristically restrained innings and Rudlin was castled by one that nipped back. Ahmed (17), Goodfellow (14) and Wyldes (20) all got themselves established before falling as the Saints players and supporters on the sidelines continuously oscillated between states of comfort and nervousness. Dean (18*) remained a source of hope for St. Albans in the latter stages, despite Rosson and Rajani falling victim to the variable bounce in the wicket. When last man Telkman arrived at the crease, 17 runs were required (overs at this point were inconsequential). Despite Dean crashing a couple of boundaries to bring St. Albans within touching distance of victory, Telkman edged Davey to first slip with just 6 runs required for victory to spark jubilant celebrations from the visitors.
A game of two-halves for St. Albans in what was very much a case of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Despite the result causing Saints to fall further behind the top 2, with 5 games remaining, more than enough points remain up for grabs to enable the 2s to retain hope of promotion.
