St Albans Cricket Club Won by 4 wkts, with 4 balls left

Match report It’s coming home!

On the hottest night of the year, would St Albans U17s’ girls be too hot to handle for North Middlesex CC?

Middlesex arrived late and with a squad of 7. St Albans joint captains, Jessie Ainsworth and Iseult Jones, had no hesitation in putting the magnificent 7 into the superheated cauldron that is Sandpit Lane. The bowling was tight and Middlesex were restricted to 91 for 9. At least 4 Middlesex players had identical twin sisters in the team ( or so it appeared to this correspondent....). Wickets were equally shared around the Jones family (Celeste 1-14, Alice 1-8 and Iseult 2-8), with 2 run-outs during their respective spells. Great work from Jess Warwick behind the stumps who took 3 run outs on the evening. Imogen Warwick (1-1) and Jessie Ainsworth (1-6) also took wickets but everyone bowled well, with Cleo Spittall 0-4 and Olivia Howeson 0-9, Grace O’Grady 0-11, Georgina Reynolds 0-16 and Kate Riches 0-12.

Was a target of 92 gettable? At 10 without loss after 2 overs, yes. At 13 for 5 you would have got reasonable odds on a Middlesex victory. The top 5 of veteran batsmen: Ainsworth, Warwick J, Jones I, Jones A and Kate Riches were all out early, having contributed a combined total of 2 from the bat. Thank goodness for Miss T Extras for her 13 at that point. Grace O’Grady batted well and contributed valuable runs as she stared to build a partnership with Cleo Spittall. Grace was unlucky to be bowled by a grubber on 6, with the score now 32-6 and St Albans on the edge. Worry not, dear reader, as Cleo Spittall hit 40 not out and Georgina Reynolds 15 not out in a partnership of 60 that saw St Albans home, with an over to spare. Fizzy pop and crisps all round. The U17s ended their season with a 1-0 record. With St Albans requiring only a few runs near the end, Grace O’Grady was heard to shout: “Its coming home” to great laughter on both sides. What her Australian father would make of all this sporting success shall remain a mystery as he has gone very quiet on that topic since sandpaper gate.
