Old Elizabethians v St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI on Sun 22 Jul 2018 at 14:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 1 run
Match report
St Albans faced Old Elizabethians in the quarter-final of the Sunday T20 trophy this weekend. Even for Sunday cricket, team selection this weekend was even more farcical than usual; two drop-outs on Friday afternoon, one on Saturday evening, and Tom Wyldes delayed getting back from France due to an air-conditioning fault on Sunday morning. Credit to Jimmy Rosson for stepping up to the plate (“if you are at the point of 100% desperation I will help”), especially given the energy and effort he had put into the 2s social the night before.
Having rushed straight from Gatwick, skipper Howeson promptly won the toss (sacré bleu I hear you say) and elected to bat given the appetising boundary sizes and general Sunday custom. Due to the terrifying prospect of a Foster-Rosson-Smith-Telkman tail, Foster was put out to open to split up the batsman a little bit. Having doored it just as he did last time he opened in a T20, Foster deliciously clipped one off his legs for four, before getting out next ball. Jokingly he referred to “starting the collapse” on his way off. Unfortunately, Murray (who had somewhat typically looked in fine form) got out next ball, followed by Goddard snicking off to a truly dreadful hat-trick ball. A hat-trick of Foster-Murray-Goddard? Eat your heart out Jordan Clark.
At 20-3 and with two batsmen yet to face a delivery, it didn’t look great for the Saints. However, what followed was a refreshingly competent partnership between Howeson and Rosson, the former successfully putting away any bad balls. Rosson was in less impressive touch, but did play the shot of the day with a 6 over extra cover, and admirably rotated the strike given that Howeson was finally seeing the ball like he does in nets. Together, Howeson (76* off 59) and Rosson (25) put on a partnership of 110 in 14 overs, putting St Albans in good stead for the second innings. In truth, the innings didn’t quite push on as hoped for, but it still felt like a winning total.
The second innings couldn’t have got off to a better start, with Mini Telks dismissing Old Elizabethians’ overseas player who had scored heavily in our previous Sunday fixture this year. Telkman and Smith were unlucky not to get more wickets in their opening spells; Foster getting a much-needed breakthrough in the eighth over. At 71-2 off 10, the game was finely in the balance. The next wicket was quite the spectacle, with Veeda-affected Charlie Smith being literally knocked off his feet whilst taking a catch.
The opposition’s number 4 batted nicely throughout; he was on 32 having only faced one dot ball. With Rosson’s spell disappointingly ending with 2 boundaries, Old Elizabethians needed only 20 off their last 3 overs; somewhat poetic given that St Albans’ previous low-point was at 20-3 earlier in the day. Foster came back into the attack to take another wicket and only going for 3 runs, finishing with figures of 3-15 from his 4 overs. Telks (4-0-18-1) bowled an equally impressive final over that only went for 4 runs – leaving 13 runs needed for victory off the last. This over was also notable for what roving reporter Kirwan aptly described as “the worst run out attempt seen in living memory” by Smith.
Despite that, Smith bowled the last over with admirable accuracy, taking advantage of the bizarre rules where there were no field restrictions and restricting Old Elizabethians’ to 2s – St Albans eventually coming out victorious by 1 run. St Albans thus progress to the finals day of the tournament; the date awaits but it should be a great craic whenever it is! Viva la T20
