Old Albanian IV v St Albans Cricket Club 4XI on Sat 25 May 2019 at 13.00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 2 Runs

Match report A fixture against local rivals Old Albanians saw the 4th team making the short trip up Harpenden Road. Put into bat Manny(19) and Najib(33) started nicely, putting on 53 for the first wicket. Hugo (33) and Najib then pushed on with boundaries coming frequently and some good running between the wickets. For reasons best known to themselves batsmen 5 and 6 then went off to get drinks. Inevitably another wicket fell causing a certain amount of chaos on the boundary. When 3 wickets fell for 20 runs thing looked a bit ropey but Kevin Milton batted sensibly to anchor the innings while he watched a series of cameos going on around him. Mahesh (another 33, the score of the day) batted nicely before getting frustrated and holing out. 21 not out from Umar Mukhtar plus some lusty if agricultural blows from the lower order gave a competitive but by no means unassailable score of 185 from 39.3 overs.

Bilal and new boy Saud bowled a tight opening spell,Saud clean bowling the opener with a great ball. Bilal got his partner to nick off and things were looking good at 17 for 2. Old Albanians dug in and moved things along but a flurry of wickets (two for Umar Mukhtar and a peach for his brother Shan, clipping the top of leg stump) left things nicely poised at 73 for 5 at drinks. Young Zac Tarrant then produced a mature spell of 5 overs 1 for 15 with fast, if sometimes erratic support, from Mahesh at the other end. Getting into the business end of the innings all results were still on. A partnership of 59 between the OAs skipper and a really good young colt threatened to take the game away from us but Umar, coming back into the attack for his second spell, got the all important break through. Saud and Bilal kept things pretty tight but a few lusty blows meant 12 were needed from the final two overs. A tight over from Umar left 8 needed from the final 6 balls. A decent shot followed by a streaky edge left the equation reading 4 from 3. But the pressure told and the OA’s number 6 ran himself out on a jug avoiding 48. With two needed off the last ball ex St Albans player Sam Pullan came charging down the pitch. Thankfully for skipper Dave Ashton(on the wrong end of an almost identical situation for the 3s last week) he ran straight past it and Hugo whipped off the bails. A really good win in which all 11 players contributed, that leaves us well placed for Bamville next week.
