Watford Town IV v St Albans Cricket Club 4XI on Sat 08 Jun 2019 at 13.00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 5 runs

Match report The 4s travelled to Watford Town expecting a delayed start, but the pitch had dried quickly from overnight rain. With plenty of damp areas still on the pitch the St Albans skipper had no hesitation in putting Watford Town into bat.
James Sutton extracted some great bounce from the spicy pitch and was unlucky not to take some early wickets. Bilal Siddique also bowled tight lines and thought he had the breakthrough as the ball was hit straight to Umar, who went through a full juggling routine the Cirque du Soleil would have been proud of, before eventually the ball hit the ground. It turned out that many others had also been part of the same circus troupe as 6 other players put chances down during the innings.
Watford progressed carefully to 84 without loss after 18 overs. Nadeem Arif (8-2-26-2) suffered most from the dropped catches but finally broke the opening partnership in the 19th , after a polite LBW enquiry was upheld by Paul Pizzey (ex-St Albans player now umpiring and playing at Watford Town). Without support from fielders the bowlers had to target the stumps and Tom Bentley (5-1-16-2) picked up 2 well deserved wickets. After the drinks break wickets fell steadily, and Dave Ashton (3-12-3) wrapped up the tail. Watford finishing on 163.
The St Albans reply started steadily, but a couple of quick wickets left them struggling at 23-2. Next man in Syed Naqvi was given out LBW by the umpire, but was then over-turned after intervention from the square leg umpire! Syed (25) and Manny (45) build a good partnership of 40 and the game was finely balanced at 63-2. However Watford held on to all their catches and momentum shifted firmly towards Watford as St Albans found themselves in trouble again at 96-7 in the 28th over. Nadeem Arif (31*) kept the game alive. Manny Nisar had played his anchor role perfectly and was finally undone by the vagaries of the pitch, and Manny was the 8th wicket to fall. A great cameo from James Sutton (13) to bring us within reach, but with 12 needed from the final over St Albans fell just a few runs short.
St Albans can take plenty of positives out of the game, but will need to work on their catching, and look at converting more 1s into 2s, and 2s into 3s, to help their run chases.
