St Albans Cricket Club 4XI v Shenley Village IV on Sat 22 Jun 2019 at 13.00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 4 runs

Match report On what felt to be the first sunny day for weeks the 4s took on high flying Shenley Village. With a strong batting line up skipper Dave Ashton decided, despite the reputation of the Sandpit lane wicket in recent matches, to have a bat. 45 or so minutes later the score was 22 for 6 and it looked like things might be over very quickly. To be fair to Shenley their opening bowlers bowled tightly and were backed up by a level of athleticism in the field that felt frankly unfair at 4th team level. Luckily however their catching was much more the level we are used to, otherwise things could have looked even worse. After watching a series of batsman walk out only to return a few minutes later muttering darkly about the pitch and the, let’s say, variable bounce Christian Hay strode out to join Manny at the crease. To the surprise of most on the boundary what followed was an innings that could be described with words like “sensible”, “watchful” and “patient” – although since it was a Hay innings you also needed to add “noisy”. Manny and Christian saw off the openers and built a partnership of 41. When Christian fell for 15 Manny was joined by Nadeem and together they put on another 53. Shenley were looking a bit shell shocked by this point and by the end St Albans had made it to a competitive total of 133. Manny the star of the show carrying his bat for an unbeaten 63.
Christian and James opened the bowling, getting movement and bounce to pick up early wickets. They were backed up by a fine fielding display, with good catches from Hugo behind the stumps and Mahesh at point. James bowled through to finish with the miserly figures of 1/21 from his 8 overs and could feel unlucky not to have picked up a couple more with some LBW shouts that looked pretty close. Christian picked up a couple to finish with 2/16 from his 8 and Shenley were on the back foot. Josh and Nadeem then took over to bowl tightly, Josh picking up the wicket of the day with a ball that gripped and spun to take the outside edge – Manny with a good grab at slip. With tension building Khayrul Islam (3/15) kept an end tight but Umar from the other end couldn’t quite find his line and the balance started to swing again. Umar then picked up a crucial wicket but when Khyrul put down a difficult caught and bowled chance it felt like the game was slipping away. The very next ball though went straight to mid-off leaving the young final pair a dozen or so still to get. Although they batted nicely the pressure eventually told and the game finished with a run out. Yet another tight finish for the 4s, who don’t like to make life easy for themselves, but a really good win with everyone contributing once again.
