St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Luton Town & Indians IV on Sat 20 Jul 2019 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 23 runs
Match report
For a time, heavy showers threatened the 3s home fixture against Luton Town & Indians IV, however drying conditions allowed the captains to agree to a 2pm start, and a reduced 37 over game.
Winning yet another toss, the skipper elected to field first, and opening bowlers Baylis and Button made quick inroads, each nabbing wickets in their second overs to put St Albans on top early. The young pair both bowled with good pace and beat the bat repeatedly, deserving better figures.
A precedent of sorts had been set though, with Luton Town's third wicket pair of Ali and Rana playing positively and earning a little luck to compile a near century partnership. While the bowling was diligent and the fielding showed good effort, chances were few and far between, though Saints would rue missing a difficult catch on the boundary before Ali (63) really hit his stride. With the run rate never really dropping below four an over, the visitors set a good pace. Fortunately Murphy was able to claim wickets (4/39), aided by a couple of decent catches, in particular another outstanding effort from Parkinson. A late flurry saw LT&I reach 168, a decent 37 over total on a wicket that was assisting the seamers.
Saints' start was less than ideal as Knill-Jones was stunned by a first up full toss with which he duly found the fieldsman. Rudlin (16) and Parkinson (15), dealing well with anything short, dug in for a while, but wickets kept coming. The arrival of Moksy Islam at the crease brought a welcome change in momentum, perhaps precipitated by his desire for an early departure, having made himself available for work on the presumption that the early rain would lead to an abandonment. Whatever the reason, Moksy was able to find the boundary like no other batsman on the day, picking up the short ball beautifully. It was however a one man show, as partners at the other end failed to stay with him - with an outstanding spell by Luton Town youngster Ali (4-11) making regular inroads.
In Baylis, Moksy found something of a more persistent partner, and with two overs left 27 runs were required - not unlike Ben Stokes faced in the World Cup cliffhanger. Could Moksy pull off a Stokes-like miracle? Regrettably it was not to be, as the need for quick runs brought an unfortunate run out.
Saints thus fell 23 runs short, with Moksy's 72 not out the outstanding contribution. Once again the IIIs went close without managing to claim victory. More than one player would be disappointed with their individual performances; collectively the team should have been strong enough to win here. Instead another defeat leaves the IIIs drifting further down the league table. Next up, Knebworth Park, a must win fixture against the bottom team.
