St Albans Cricket Club 1XI v Stevenage 1 on Sat 11 May 2019 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won By 88 runs
Match report
The 2019 season kicked off with a fine win against last seasons Division 1 relegated Stevenage. A wet week saw the teams arrive to a damp wicket and Capaldi lost the toss and was asked to bat.
Capaldi and Hounslow opened up and punished some wayward opening bowling as Stevenage failed to make use of a helpful pitch. Capaldi (26) was undone playing all around the rare straight delivery and soon after Hounslow (13) joined him back in the pavilion being caught in the slips.
White (43) and Coulman (17) went about re building the innings knocking the ball around the vast Clarence park outfield. Coulman after becoming bogged down had a brain fade. After just about chipping the ball over mid off the next ball he tried the same shot again only to pick out mid off perfectly. Howeson (32) arrived in the middle and his busy style of play saw the run rate rise as the Stevenage fielding effort became ragged. A 60 run partnership had been made before Howeson mis-judged the length of a ball and was unfortunately bowled. White was out shortly afterwards trying accelerate the St. Albans innings.
The impetus was continued by Hall (42) who after an injured plagued 2018 looked to be back to somewhere near his best after nearly throwing it away slogging his first ball. Deft sweeps and reverse sweeps saw Stevenage confused as to where to bowl and the first six if the season was smote into the tennis courts to everyone’s surprise. However, to no one surprise he was out playing the reverse sweep. A year at Glasgow University seems to have paid dividends to Winfield (40*) who played a surprisingly mature innings and with Caley (17*) guided St Albans to an above par 248.
Stevenage openers came out with positive intent as the pitch after a day of sunshine was starting to play much better. White and Roche in a bid for early season fitness requested long spells and to their delight they both sent down their full allocation in one go. Roche (1-31) beat the bat numerous times and had a couple of very close lbw turned down. A fine spell from the debutant. White (1-33) from the other end was his usual miserly self letting very little go and managed to pry the dangerous Brown out.
After the opening bowlers had finished their spells the Stevenage middle order started having a bit of a slog. Winfield (1-23) was able to break the partnership as the surprise slower ball gentle full toss was spooned to Howseon who took his first of 3 catches. Capaldi (3-32) bowled a tight line seeing all of his wickets caught as Stevenage middle order crumbed despite Coulmans best effort dropping what is an early contender for drop of the season. In between the catches Watkins effected a smart run out as St Albans looked to close the innings off quickly.
The innings was mopped up by Hall (3-18) who didn’t know himself what was going to come out was able to flummox the batmen. Half trackers were mixed in with full tosses and then the magic wicket delivery.
This saw St Albans to a comfortable 88 run win and a cracking all round team performance to start the season with. Many thanks to Lucy for stepping in last minute to learn how to score on Saturday morning before scoring in the afternoon!
