St Margaretsbury I v St Albans Cricket Club 1XI on Sat 01 Jun 2019 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets

Match report The 1s were victims of another well-deserved “tongue-lashing” from skipper Capaldi as they conspired again to ruin a clean sweep for St Albans in a similarly disappointing fashion as last week.

Batting first at the quaint St Margaretsbury ground (as ever, quaint meaning small boundaries in part), the St Albans innings never got going, despite birthday boy Hounslow getting off the mark with his first ever six in adult cricket. That Hounslow had received a pair of half and half Luton and Chelsea shorts for his birthday was evident as he also swept a seamer for six, eventually scoring 30 of St Albans 35’ runs when he was dismissed. The misery continued as Jamie Regan, Howeson, and Coulman fell in quick succession, making the score 65-6 off 21 overs. As JR aptly put it in the St Albans CC WhatsApp group, “this is too depressing”. (Credit to Howeson for bringing a small piece of joviality via his caught and bowled dismissal in which he loudly called “waiting” before being dismissed.)

White (42) and Hall (40) helped to restore some pride to the St Albans effort, putting on a partnership of 67 in 12 overs. However, after a questionable run out decision against White, and some equally questionable shots (the phrase “catching practice” has probably never been so appropriate) from Winfield, Kendal, and Hall, the 1st XI could only manage 140 all out in a mere 38.1 overs.

This total proved to be far less than enough, even despite some good periods in the field. White continued his commendable day with a miserly spell (7-2-10-0), whilst skipper Capaldi (5-2-15-1) also bowled with admirable control. Both were helped by the St Margaretsbury opener who was spectacularly boring and scored at about 1 run an over, but he would have been the third top scorer for St Albans with 31 so perhaps we should not be too quick to judge. Despite debutant Joe Regan dismissing the set St Margaretsbury batsman and White confidently declaring from first slip that “I think we’re going to win this game”, any potential nerves were squashed (particularly after one generous over from Hall) as the home team won by 7 wickets in just 31.3 overs. The 1s play Abbots Langley at Clarence Park on Saturday, hoping for a return to happier times, if only for JR’s sake.
