Old Elizabethans v St Albans Cricket Club 1XI on Sat 15 Jun 2019 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won By 6 Wickets

Match report St Albans 1st XI enjoyed a comprehensive victory away at Old Elizabethians (hereafter OEs) this weekend, probably because the players feared another bombardment of criticism from skipper Capaldi.

Capaldi had lost the toss and was somewhat staggered to hear the home skipper elect to bat first, even considering checking if he had heard his opposition number correctly. For context, the pitch was predictably moist given the week's weather, with gloomy clouds above and a long outfield for good measure. Indeed, from the very first ball the opposition struggled to score at all. In just the second over Capaldi profited from falling over in comical fashion, running out an OEs opener had been fooled into coming back for a second by the skipper's tumble. What followed was a truly dull period of play; one can only imagine the boredom of true clubman Amit Rajani who was on scoring duties for the 1s due to the adverse conditions at Clarence Park this week.

Roche (10-4-11-1) and White (10-3-18-1) certainly bowled well, but the lack of intent to run singles, and a complete inability to put away bad balls meant that OEs had amassed a mere 9 runs in their first 11 overs. Roche was a bastion of economical bowling, with his first 7 overs going for a mere 3 runs. Whilst the run rate did comparatively increase, Roche and White both finished their applaudable 10 over spells to leave St Albans in a commanding position, the score 30-3 after 20 overs.

Joe Regan and Winfield came on next and continued the tight bowling, backed up by generally excellent fielding performance throughout; a drop from the worse-for-wear T. F. Coulman being the only exception. Regan in particular found plenty of variety off the pitch during his fruitful spell, finishing with figures of 3-18 from his 10. All the while the extremely cocky OEs star batsman continued to play a puzzling innings; Winfield dismissed him for 22 when he was finally attempting to hit some boundaries after deciding 25 overs was enough time to get his eye in. Despite some relatively good partnerships towards the end of the innings, OEs only managed 119-10 off 49.5 overs.

Boosted by an excellent tea (chilli con carne, hot dogs, pasta bake, you name it), there was a unexpected role reversal for the opening pair of Hounslow and Capaldi. Dispatching anything short and hitting 3 sixes in his innings of 29, it was finally becoming clear why Toby Furnivall had nicknamed Hounslow "Hammer" all those years ago. At the other end, Capaldi struggled for fluency throughout, but remained patient and anchored the innings, scoring 45 off 94 deliveries before being dismissed when the result was a formality. One can only assume that Kendal will be opening the bowling next week in this upside down world we live in.

Despite a few minor hiccups, the 1st XI claimed a 6 wicket victory with 17 overs to spare; White hitting a maximum to finish the game in style. Certainly the 1s will face trickier opposition in the future, but even Capaldi was relatively positive after a solid performance to bounce back after last week's disappointment.
