St Albans Cricket Club 1XI v Holtwhite Trinibis I on Sat 22 Jun 2019 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets
Match report
‘Curse’ is a strong word, but the Regan family must be looking for some respite after the 1s lost another game in the final over at Clarence Park, this time Jamie given the unenviable task of defending 7 off the final over. The disappointment of the loss was only compounded by the bizarre fact that teammate Roche hit Regan on the back of his head after the final delivery with perhaps his hardest throw of the day. Certainly, it seemed like a long time ago that Regan was looking his regal best with the bat earlier in the day.
Capaldi won the toss and decided to bat in the sunshine at Clarence, but the innings did not begin as hoped; the skipper caught from a leading edge and White bowled shortly afterwards, leaving the 1st XI 18-2. However, with Jamie Regan (79) coming to the crease (a direct replacement for his brother Joe who was in Bath in the name of young love), the innings began to turn around. Regan and Hounslow (35) put on 60 runs together in good time before Hammer’s temporary blindness conspired against him.
Next, Coulman (44) and Regan (79) put on an excellent partnership of 95 off 111 deliveries, with Regan in particular pleasing the crowd with some imperious looking strokes. Regan soon chipped one to extra cover, but at 178-4 off 38 overs, St Albans looked well set for an imposing score. Unfortunately, Coulman decided to run himself out shortly afterwards, and all the following batsmen struggled to find the timing that Regan and Coulman had shown; some good running between the wickets more generally providing some solace. With Caley hitting a 4 off the last ball to secure full batting points and a final total of 245-9, the 1s had placed themselves in a good position to secure a second victory on the bounce.
Unfortunately, the Holtwhites Trinibis innings started well, with an opening partnership of 64 off the first twelve overs of the innings. Winfield (who bowled accurately all innings) broke the partnership, aided by the fact that one of the openers controversially holed out to long on despite their solid start. The second wicket partnership was again sizeable with 79 being made, but it was noticeable that the scoring rate had begun to drop, with this partnership taking some 21 overs. Capaldi’s spell of 10-3-29-1 was the primary driver of this relative squeeze. Another wicket followed shortly afterwards, Regan with a direct hit with just one stump to aim at.
At this point then, Holtwhites looked like they may have dug themselves into a hole; 91 required off 13 with two new batsmen at the crease. The Holtwhites skipper was lucky to still be at the crease after clearly gloving one in the air to Coulman off the bowling of Hall; he was later run out on 21 after yet more confusion between the wickets. However, generally, there were far too many 2s available, even in the enormous playing arena at Clarence Park. Holtwhites’ number 5 took advantage of these playing dimensions, scoring 59 off 44 with just 16 runs in boundaries, in a match-winning (if not slightly fortuitous) knock; Holtwhites eventually winning by 4 wickets and 3 balls to spare.
