St Albans Cricket Club 2XI v Hertford 3XI on Sat 24 Aug 2019 at 13.00
St Albans Cricket Club Won 37 runs

Match report St Albans 2XI headed into this week’s fixture off the back of three vital wins in the hunt for a late season push for promotion, with the knowledge that only wins would suffice in the remainder of their run in to keep the dreams of an end of season celebration alive.

Encountering a Hertford 3XI side who the 2’s claimed victory over in the reverse fixture, hopes and expectations were high as we were put into bat by the opposition skipper on a bright, hot day at Clarence Park.

Openers Moksudul Islam and Zach West, both drafted in this week had clear instructions to stay busy at the crease and make the field work hard in the heat, and the pair negotiated the first 10 overs well with both batsmen finding their rhythm well. Good speed between the wickets helped when calling was at times questionable, but the partnership developed nicely and the pair dispatched the bad deliveries to the fence when put on offer with good ball striking.

The 20th over came and the solid 82 run partnership ended with Moksy departing after making 25. Shortly after, West drove through the on side for 2 to bring up his half century, then got himself out 2 overs later to a frustratingly poor ball; but with Nav and Saqib now at the crease St Albans were in good stead as they proceeded to bat well, and after going close on a few run out attempts they put on a healthy 42 run partnership before Nav’s innings of 30 runs ended. We now stood at 137-3 off of 36 overs, with the knowledge we would need to at least pass 200 to give ourselves a realistic shout.

Saqib departed making 34 before being run out, and Jimmy Rosson followed after making 6 singles. O’Toole (19) and captain Rajani (13) then worked well to find the gaps and kept the scorer busy to move us to 183-5 off of 45. Wickets then began to fall but the scoring didn’t halt as the tail well and truly wagged as Ben Adshead contributed a busy 11. Josh Mulvaney found the boundary then snicked off to bring Charles Smith and Dan Rosson together to cooly bat out the overs playing nice shots into gaps, and running to great effect.

Tea was enjoyed and the 218 score posted was considered around par, but a lively start in the field was necessary to get the game under control.

Opening bowlers Adshead and Smith went to work and tried to dislodge the opening pair, bowling some good pace and channels, producing chances that just didn’t fall for us. After the introduction of Saqib and Dan Rosson to the attack pressure was building but the Hertford opening pair were still in by drinks after 19 overs, and were on target to cause an upset. Encouraging words were exchanged and we set about our work well after the break as we started to take our chances in the field and continue the squeeze. Wickets were claimed by Josh, Saqib and Amit after some resolute bowling, with Amit finishing with 4 wickets for just 18 runs off of his 10 and Josh claiming one of their key players in his spell.
As well as his 3 wickets with the ball, Saqib also claimed another scalp with a clean pickup and throw onto the stumps from point which ended a good opposition partnership.

Chaz Smith (2 wickets, 3 maidens) ended proceedings in the final over as the opposition were bowled out for 181 after the Hertford batsman snicked to the safe hands of Rosson behind the stumps. the game was a foregone conclusion in the remaining 5 overs, however the step up in the field that we produced after drinks was needed in the middle overs.

The reminder by Amit in the post-game team talk was that we made it tough at times when it didn’t need to be, and that we certainly couldn’t be as flat as a roasted duck in the field again at any point next week. All in all, the 2nd XI had much to be pleased about with other key results in division 5A going our way adding further weight to our victory; and with that now being 4 on the bounce we head to Radlett next time out with high hopes of making it 5.
