St Albans Cricket Club 5XI v Shenley Village on Sat 13 Jul 2019 at 13:30
St Albans Cricket Club Lost

Match report The club XI entertained Shenley on the astro at Sandpit lane. As Shenley were a few players short we leant them a few players, a decision that we were going to come to regret by close of play. The game could not have started much better for the saints, with the opposition skipper cutting the first ball of the day from Saud straight to Umar at point who took a sharp catch. That brought saints colt Zac to the wicket who batted nicely for his 18, putting on a decent partnership for the second wicket. Shan and Saud bowled well without reward, with several balls beating the bat. A double bowling change finally broke the partnership, Fin getting the bragging rights for the day picking up the wickets of both Zac and Tom C (also playing for the oppo) while Lorna held her nerve after a couple of big hits to pick up two wickets of her own. Shenley then looked to accelerate with some lusty hitting, Kav and Sam doing well to pick up a wicket each before Siva came on to clean up the tail with the excellent figures of 3/18 from his 3.2 overs. All in all a decent bowling performance and an excellent effort in the field with plenty of catches taken but 45 extras conceded was a little disappointing. A special mention to John Webber behind the stumps who took the phrase taking one for the team to a whole new level wearing a number of wayward deliveries on a range of body parts to leave him with a fine selection of bruises at the end of the game.
The second innings started slowly as the Shenley opening bowlers bowled with pace and aggression, offering little to hit. There were some mixed feeling here as one of those bowlers was our own Tom Bentley, who finished with fine figures of 1/17 from his 7 overs including 2 maidens. 8 for 2 was not quite the start we had hoped for, John and Umar both falling cheaply to good deliveries which brought the father and son combination of Ben and Fin Killner to the crease. They steadied the ship, Ben plying some attacking strokes while Fin did well to hold an end up and see off the opening bowlers. Ben was then joined by Siva, who started to accelerate the scoring and the target of 200 started to look eminently achievable. When Ben was well caught for 29 Siva was joined by Sam Baksi. The pair put on a partnership of 80 odd, Siva playing some big shots while Sam intelligently rotated the strike and kept things ticking over. With the game nicely poised Siva was then dismissed by the ball of the day, a fine yorker from the returning opening cleaning him up for 74. Despite cameos from Lorna and Kav and a belligerent 27 from Shan at the end an asking rate of over 8 an over was always going to be too much and saints eventually fell 17 runs short of their target. A good game though with fine performances from some of our talented colts in particular.
