Match report Saints took on a familiar foe, Old Cholmeleians, in this encounter at Sandpit Lane.

Walker preferred to bowl first and threw the ball to Chennells to start proceedings. From his long run, Chennells immediately generated good pace, testing the opening batsmen, who had some fortune with the ball flying off the edge to the boundary. It was Winfield who took the first wicket, in his usual tight spell (1/25). The score had reached 65, in just 12 overs, when Chennells was rewarded with the key wicket of Gibberd. Tarrant, showing the benefit of plenty of net sessions, earned himself the next two wickets (2/35), and Old Cholms revealed a lack of depth in their batting lineup as Church nabbed his first wicket for the 3s. Welcomed back to the team, Alfie Button secured a wicket with his first delivery, and challenged the batsmen for his own brace of wickets. With the visitors threatening to finish with a more challenging target than desired, Chennells returned to bowl - and decimated the tail, finishing the innings with a blitzkrieg: three wickets in four balls, each batsman beaten for pace to be bowled, and a well deserved return of 4/44.

Set 165 to win in 40 overs, each of the top three looked set for success after some fine shots (none finer than debutant's Hussain audacious clip over square leg for four), but fell to leave Saints 3/29. This score brought together the pair of Lawrence and Mistry - an often seen off-field pairing too - and a partnership just short of 50 put St Albans in a much better place. Lawrence was adjudged LBW for 23, which lead to three further quick wickets - 7/93 now. Mistry was still going, though, and was joined by the prodigal son, Button. for another invaluable partnership. Mistry was unfortunate to fall short of a half century (45) but had set the team on the path to victory. It was left to Button (35 not out) to guide the team home, and it was fitting that his boundary sealed a fine victory.

With many contributors across a young team, the skipper lauded his XI's performance both on and off the field, and looked forward to the coming fixtures.
