Match report A Hard Fought Draw

Performance Highlight: Sam Mistry 44, James Church 2 for 23

Stand in skipper Winfield was hoping to win the toss and bat under glorious sunny skies, but lost and not surprisingly the 4s were asked to field.

The opening bowling pair of James Church and Sam Davey kept it very tight, with Potten End 38 for 1 after their opening 12 over spell. Davey had an edge caught by Wilton and Church was unlucky not to collect any wickets in this spell, as both bowlers beat the bat several times. New bowler Khatavkar took 1 wicket in a good spell of 1 for 20 from 6 overs and at 61 for 2 at the half way stage the Saints were confident of keeping Potten End to a sub 150 score. However no 3 bat P Raeburn was starting to get his timing and hit several powerful straight drives to the boundary.

Arif and Khan were brought into the attack to give some variety and after tight initial overs, Raeburn and new left hand bat started to tee off. Arif was unfortunate not to take any wickets with 2 relative simple drops and a hard c&b attempt. Winfield brought himself on had a similar experience of a few initial tight overs and both batsmen taking to driving back over long on and off and taking some tap! A sharp low one handed caught & bowled by Winfield got the aggressive Raeburn out and with the introduction of new bats, Church and Davey were brought back into the attack, which slowed the run rate and got wickets. Church collected the 2 wickets he deserved and finished with a very good 2 for 23 from 8. Potten End finished on 198 for 8 from their 40 overs, which would be a tough score to get, but less than at one point seemed likely.

Tarrant and Melling opened the batting and both looked settled but fell cheaply with Saints at 26 for 2. The introduction of Thomas (28) and Khan (14) brought some momentum and strike rate with several nice fours between them, before both fell, bringing Sam Mistry to the crease. Tom Wilton and Jamie Church quickly perished leaving Saints at 102 for 6 and the 199 target seeming a very long way off. Sensing the situation Mistry played a very controlled and mature innings, taking singles and keeping the strike rotated, which allowed Sam Davey (25) to play a typical aggressive cameo and also brought about some momentum to the Saints.

When Mistry finally fell for 44 off the only chance he gave, Saints were 172 for 9, with last wicket pair Winfield and Khatavkar requiring 27 to win in 4 overs and Potten End needing just the 1 wicket. The pair looked to get bat on ball, run hard and take on anything loose, which put pressure on the opposition and they got to the last over needing 7 to win. Agonisingly 6 runs were manged and the game was drawn on the very last ball of a long day in the sun, with Winfield (14) and Khatavkar (10) finishing not out.

This was a good fightback from the 4s and the dejected look on Potten End players at the end was as they felt they should have won. Played in a very good spirit throughout and with a Potten End umpired who did the entire match in very consistent and fair, it was time to head for cool beer!
