St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Aldenham on Sat 03 Jul 2021 at 12:00 midday
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 159 runs

Match report The 3s were back at SLCG this week for the visit of table-toppers Aldenham, hoping to banish the memory of a frustratingly poor batting performance the week previous. The forecast of mid-morning rain was inevitably off the mark, and with all but a slightly dewy outfield, the covers were carefully removed and play was able to commence at midday as scheduled.

Skipper Walker came 2nd in the toss, and St Albans were asked to have a bat, with Manny and Zach venturing out to the middle. Whilst not necessarily express pace, the Aldenham opening pair started well and found good lengths early swinging the ball. Manny and Zach dug in, finding runs where they could in the opening 9 overs in which they put on 24 runs and rather remarkably hadn’t moved from their pre-determined end, except for when briefly touching down and swivelling back to run a rare 2! Zach was going well on 20 before mistiming one off the pitch back to their 1st change bowler in the 11th over.
Chris Mude entered and set about continuing the solid start along with Manny. Soon enough, strike was being rotated well as their bowlers tired, and 2nd and 3rd changes were brought on. Some top shots followed as the pair began to motor in the 17th over, with the short boundary being utilised to good effect from both ends. Chris went to his maiden 50 for the club - an excellent knock - with Manny inevitably following suit soon after.

The 2nd wicket partnership of 122 runs was ended in the 35th over with the score poised at a healthy 156-2. Chris and Manny’s contribution of 62 and 66 respectively had laid a great foundation for the 3s middle order to put the foot on the gas in the last 10.

Enter Humayune and Nick at 4 and 5, and along with them – the entertainment. Humayune wasted no time in going big and despatched the tired and undermanned Aldenham attack for three 6’s and three 4’s in a quickfire 44*. Nick Ralfe too found the boundary with regularity, ending with 37*, utilising his sweep to good effect, and going large over the bowler’s head for 6 which gave the spectating Joey Curran haunting memories of the STAPL the weekend previous…

93 runs in the last 10 overs gave the 3s a great total of 249-3 off of their allotted 45 – chalk and cheese to last week’s display with the bat. Kebab rolls packed full of flavour (and spice a bit too hot for Alisdair to handle) arrived in good time for the tea interval courtesy of Manny and club sponsors Tavah, leaving the 3s well fuelled to commence their stint in the field.

Openers Chaz and Joey found their lengths and rhythm well after a few looseners – with Chaz striking the top of off in his 2nd over. At the other end, a puzzling mix up allowed a high skyed ball to drop at the feet of the non-striking batsman in the bowling crease. Despite his frustration, Joey ploughed on and found an excellent length and pace in his next set taking 2 in 2 balls, the 2nd following a great diving catch from gloveman Chris. On came Aldenham’s main man and skipper to face the hattrick ball, who negotiated it well. Nevertheless, Joey had his man in his 6th over with a rash flashing drive finding the assured hands of Nick at second slip.

With their danger man gone, and the scoreboard reading 44-4 from 11 overs, the 3s were well in control. It could have got even better for Saints immediately following the introduction of Tim Winfield to the attack, had it not been for a chance going to ground at long off from his first ball. Saqib ended that trend as he was brought on next over, and duly took a good catch off his own bowling from his first delivery. Tim and Saqib squeezed the Aldenham tail and soon enough wickets began to tumble. Their only set batsman remaining departed for 36, with Zach making amends at long off taking a high swirling catch off of Tim’s bowling. Soon enough the game was over after 25.3 overs, with Tim claiming a well deserved 5-for to cap off a dominant 159 run victory against the then league leaders.

A fantastic display from the team, most notably a great response from the batting unit, coupled with some great individual performances as well. Onwards to next week, with the 3s once again at SLCG hosting bottom of the league Luton Town & Indians – a must win game in the quest for promotion this year.
