St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Pinner on Sat 14 Aug 2021 at 12:00 midday
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 42 runs

Match report A characteristically faltering batting performance from the Threes saw Saints tumble to another defeat, this time at the hands of Pinner.

The visitors arrived early in St Albans, once again showing their ambition to get everything right. Add to that making the correct call at the toss, and Saints were asked to field first.

Charging down the hill with good energy, Smith quickly found a challenging line, while his junior partner, Church, took the into the wind option. The latter generated several chances which failed to stick, so it was that Smith took the first wicket in a tight start. Malik chimed in with a wicket, well aided by a good overhead grab from Smith. However there was a lacklustre feeling on the ground, Saints lacking the vigour of past weeks. Pinner’s Dhawan pushed on comfortably, reaching a half century before Stu Murray righted a few wrongs with a catch on the boundary off Law.

The visitors had wickets in hand, and were looking to press on, which they did through Xetenarvencar and Tucker. Wickets, however, continued to fall as the fielding improved - yes, catches were held - and so the run rate failed to really lift. Smith completed eight economical overs for 2/17, while Walker’s figures of 5/29 were the pick of the day, ably assisted by keeper Rayden’s two smart legside stumpings and a pair of catches on the boundary. Pinner had tallied 171, all out in the final over.

With both teams leaning heavily on their bowling units in 2021, there was now the opportunity for the St Albans batters to chase down a moderate total on a good wicket, against a keen bowling lineup.

Early on, Nisar saw a good delivery get through his defences to set the visitors on the right path. From there the innings stuttered its way to 6/70, false shots generally to blame. Murray, Hussain and Law having made starts were all out in the teens. It was then the turn of the two teens in Saints’ lineup, Rayden and Church, to show their elders how to construct a partnership. The pair batted with resolve, yet continued to accumulate runs to keep the team in the game.

However a cluster of wickets fell, and once Church was dismissed for 24, the result felt inevitable, despite Smith’s attempts at heroics from the lofty batting position of 10. When the skipper found the point fieldsmen, the game was up, with Saints 43 short of their target. Pinner, to their credit, had bowled tidily, and significantly held some difficult chances in the field. In short, they were the better all round team on the day, and good opponents.

There is no lack of ability in the Threes squad, batting and bowling alike, but rarely has it all come together; all too infrequently the batting has shown a lack of durability. There are now just a few rounds in which to make amends.
