Knebworth Park 1st XI v St Albans Cricket Club 1XI on Sat 19 Jun 2021 at 12.00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 106

Match report
After scout Howeson’s navigation advice, the 1st XI arrived at the picturesque scenes of Knebworth Park Cricket Club. Unfortunately the weather was very underwhelming, and as a consequence the pitch was very soggy and the outfield was muddier than a Kenilworth Road goalmouth, even with the delayed 1pm start. Even with the game now reduced to 40 overs a side, the pitch was so sodden that a very cautious start was required from the St Albans top order after skipper Capaldi had lost the toss and was asked to bat.

With contributions from Capaldi (22), Regan (19), and Jerome (31), the top 5 managed to battle to 105-5 off 28 overs in challenging conditions, with all being caught in the ring after some variable bounce. St Albans then miraculously scored 98 off their final 12 overs, including some fine stroke making from Coulman (23), Mulvaney (33 off 26), and White (29 off 22). Noticeable highlights were Mulvaney’s tomahawk switch hit and White’s enormous 6 into Knebworth House grounds, and their truly vital partnership of 60 came off just 6.2 overs, taking St Albans to a strong  203-9 off their allotted 40.

Having been fairly infuriated with Hall’s decision to boot the third ball of the innings over the boundary for 4, a fired up May got a classic left-arm seamer’s LBW the very next ball. Seagrave, boosted by his midweek dismissal of Mark Stoneman, struck with another archetypal left arm dismissal the following over, sliding one through the gate to clip the top of leg. Proud Hertfordshire player May (5-0-18-2) and Seagrave (8-2-18-3) again struck in consecutive overs in the 7th and 8th, leaving Knebworth 20-4 and in a world of trouble.

Having rushed through the 20 overs needed to constitute a match, the chase never really got going, with the next three wickets falling to a wide variety of deliveries from the spin attack of Seagrave, Capaldi, and Cornwall-bound Mulvaney. Dan ‘Tank’ Bayliss (2.2-0-3-2) bowled with gusto and control to promptly sweep up the tail, whilst White provided much entertainment in his grumpiness at continuing to play in the miserable rain. Knebworth were all out for 97, making it a comprehensive 106 run victory for the 1st XI, taking them to tied second in the league with their opponents on the day. The 1st XI return home to the hallowed turf of Clarence Park to host Chorleywood next week, eager to continue their winning form.
