St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 41 runs

Match report We arrived with 6 players for an eight a side game, never a great omen. Redbourn kindly lent a 15 year old country player, which for an under 13 game improved moral in the St Albans camp no end. So it was to be 8v7, Goliath v David. The warm up went less then well when Daisy through the ball into the coach’s head while he was not looking. His memory of the game from this point may be hazy at best.

We elected to field as Darcey had to leave early. Sophie ripped through the opening pair twice. Steady bowling from Bailey, Darcey, Isabel and Daisy and their player set up Evie to keep it tight at the end. They finished on 301 for 2. So 6 an over and we were home. Unfortunately Darcey left at the turn over so we were left with 5 players and one ringer. The hill just got steeper. Evie and Isabel opened and finished with us ahead of the run rate. No wickets lost. The ringer was caught second ball and it took her batting well, ably supported by Daisy to get us back to a run rate that was now 7 an over. Still possible. Bailey and Sophie unfortunately faced their “best” bowler and batted with lovely technique but were pinned down to singles. However, with an over left Bailey opened her shoulders and hit a few 4s. The last pair, the returning Evie and the staying there Bailey needed 12 an over. Turns out they had an even better bowler and with the previous “best” bowler returning, the dream ended. Bailey was clean bowled by a beauty that ripped through her defence and 2 balls later Evie was caught behind by a ball she barely saw. St Albans finished on 260 for 5.

All 6 St Albans’ girls played with pride, bowled with good technique and fielded with courage (Daisy required an ice pack after taking one on the ankle stopping a certain 4). The 5 that batted did so with courage and with their brains switched on. There were no run-outs, no dodgy calls and no silly catches. They should be proud of what they did.
