St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 78 runs

Match report The last pre season game of the season took St Albans to Broxbourne and after much debate on ground hardness it was decided that the ground at Broxbourne was not as hard as in St Albans and Capaldi won his third toss in a row and decided to chase for the first time this year.

Broxbourne’s openers got off to a flyer with 77 runs off the first 10 overs however, May was unlucky not to have made a breakthrough in his opening spell. A double breakthrough came from Chennells who accounted for both the openers with May taking a catch that came down with snow on it.

St Albans continued to keep it tight until Regan got hit into another postcode but followed it superbly taking the next three wickets as St Albans continued to chip away at Broxbourne’s batting line up through great work in the field on some very hard ground.

Chennells and Mulveney then combined to affected a superb run out and St Albans were eyeing up bowling Broxbourne out. However, Ridley with 72 off 48 balls put the pressure back on St Albans. Once Ridley was out May and Capaldi closed out the innings and St Albans were happy to restrict Broxbourne to 256.

With the pitch deteriorating St Albans new the chase was going to be tough. Tight Broxbourne bowling was rewarded with the wicket of Hounslow and also Regan when he was caught well from a full toss. St Albans looked to tick over the strike in the middle of the innings and found themselves 87-3 at drinks. However, a wicket straight after drinks and the retirement through injury of Jerome put pay to St Albans chase.

There was a cameo from Coulman who used the sweep well scoring 31 but St Albans continued to lose wickets and in the end fell 78 runs short.

Three good pre season games have left St Albans in a good place going into the first game of the season.
