St Albans Cricket Club 2XI v Broxbourne II on Sat 01 May 2021 at 12:00pm
St Albans Cricket Club Won 82 runs
Match report
For the first home game of their season, the 2s hosted Broxbourne 2XI for the final pre-season friendly in the fixture calendar. Newly appointed skipper Jimmy Rosson assumed the helm, and duly went 0 for 1 with the coin - with St Albans being asked to bat first.
Openers Stuart and Zach followed the example set last week, and dealt with the Broxbourne opening bowlers well - punishing the bad balls on offer, and setting a good foundation for the batsman still in the hutch. With a 50 partnership reached after 15 overs for no loss, Zach conspired against himself and was ran out, finishing with 25.
This brought 2XI debutant Alisdair Sargen to the crease who started well, scoring fluidly and running aggressively between the wickets with Stu, before his partner fell victim to a blinder of a one handed catch at slip - departing for 37.
With the introduction of Ash at 4, and of Broxbourne’s 2nd change bowlers, St. Albans put their foot on the gas and accelerated the rate - with both batsman heading to their half centuries in swift fashion, aided by some powerful hitting and some more good running between the wickets on a sizeable boundary at CP.
Alisdair departed after being caught on 56, and was not-so-politely sent on his way by the Broxbourne spinner.
Skipper Jimmy entered the fray with a little work to do in order to reach what was thought a defendable total of 200 in the 40 over limit - and along with his contribution of 14, plus a short lived boundary hitting contribution from George Sims, St Albans reached a final total of 207-5.
After a spot of tea, opening pair Dan Baylis and George Sims went to work, and after a short flurry of early boundaries they found their rhythm well. Following a rather puzzling run out from a sharp bit of Amit’s fielding in the 4th over, where the batsman who had scored the vast majority of their 25 runs up to that point unnecessarily offered himself up as the victim, St Albans had the upper hand. A few overs later, Zach took a sharp catch at backward point off of George’s bowling and both their openers had been removed.
Dan and George continued to squeeze, with George taking another wicket soon after. Dan was unlucky not to take any of his own, but held up his end well with good pace that stifled the opposition whilst also continuing his streak of removing players from the field with injuries related to his bowling - Cales falling the victim this time at slip.
First change bowler Sammy then proceeded to rip through the Broxbourne middle order in rapid fashion, utilising his variations and taking three in one over to well and truly put the game out of the oppositions reach. Amit came on at the other end, and took 2 of his own in a span of 16 overs that offered few bad balls to the opposing batsman.
Broxbourne’s no.5 negotiated his way to a well made 50, but the final result was never in doubt, and Tooley ended matters with 5 overs to spare shortly after his introduction - with Broxbourne being bowled out for 125.
It was another solid all round performance with bat and ball from the team this week, accompanied with good standards in the field, which leaves a lot to be encouraged about heading into the start of the league season next weekend. Well done lads.
