St Albans Cricket Club 2XI v Radlett 3XI on Sat 31 Jul 2021 at 12 noon
St Albans Cricket Club Won By 76 Runs

Match report After a week off due to a Covid call off the week before, the 2's were back in action at CP taking on local rivals Radlett. Groundsman Caley, had to put in a shift before the game could commence, this was down to the Head Coach, Director of Cricket and various other senior members of the club deciding to cover a used wicket on Thursday evening rather than the one that had been prepared.

Whilst Caley was busy rolling, cutting and marking, the team got to work on the usual warm up routine, though this week it included J Button participating in the 5 aside with his bacon sandwich after arriving 30 minutes late! Button was especially pleased that the skipper won the toss and elected to bat, allowing him much needed time to recover after suffering from the bacon sweats.

West and Dean opened the batting for the Saints and got off to a steady start. However, Dean was caught at mid-on with the score at 30 and unfortunately Ralfe followed shortly after leaving the Saints 33-2 after the first 10 overs. This brought skipper Rosson to the crease to join West, who was looking in good touch.

West continued his good early start, playing the aggressor at the start of what would turn out to be a very valuable 3rd wicket partnership, the lofted straight drives a particular highlight. With West nearing 50, there was a brief rain delay, reducing the game to 47 overs per side. The delay didn’t put the breaks on the Saints innings, both West and Rosson started to dispatch the ball to the boundary regularly as well as rotating the strike with quick singles, of which one brought up West's 50.

Rosson brought up his 50 a few overs later and with partnership on 124, West classy innings came to an end, out for 78. Law joined the skipper and looked to help push the innings on. After a few good overs for the Saints, Rosson was caught for 73, leaving the 2s on a 192-4 after 40. The wicket was a tough one to score quickly from ball one, so some good scampering of 1s and 2s from the lower middle order meant the Saints finished up on 228-7 off their 47.

Winfield and Adshead set about the task of dismantling the Radlett top order, a task which was made all the more interesting, as the 2s pushed to get 20 overs in to ensure a game was completed, with the bed weather closing in. Both bowlers bowled their full allocation on the spin Winfield taking 1 (unlucky not to of got more) and Adshead picking up 3fer, fine spells by both.

Swan and Ralfe took over and backed the openers up superbly, Ralfe getting 1 and Swan taking 3fer. At this point a special mention to Mark Adshead for coming to the 2s rescue as a substitute fielder when the Skipper was shot by the CP sniper whilst chasing one to the boundary. And to Caley for donning the gloves in the skippers absence.
Button, joined in the wickets taking 2 (1 less than the amount of bacon rashers consumed), ensuring that the Saints came out comfortable winners by 76 runs.
