St Albans Cricket Club 2XI v Knebworth Park 2XI on Sat 14 Aug 2021 at 12 noon
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 128 runs
Match report
After the frustration of last weeks cancellation the 2s looked to take another huge step towards promotion against bottom side Knebworth. Walking wounded skipper J. Rosson strode to the middle and broke the news that we were batting first.
Hammer and Westy opened up and negotiated the first 10 overs without loss which gave the 2s a great platform for the innings. A couple of overs later however, West was gone chipping one to mid off for a well made 28. This bought Howeson together with Hammer and they managed the innings superbly. Many fine shots later the pair had put on a partnership worth well over 100 without looking in trouble at any point from the tired Knebworth bowling attack. Unfortunately just shy of his ton Hammer was caught at square leg. However, his 90 runs had set the side up for a huge total. Following this with 10 overs to go the innings stalled somewhat with wickets falling cheaply and at regular intervals. Through all of this Howeson had been watching the wickets go down from the other end and was perhaps a little unfortunate not to have as much of the strike as he could have had. He fell just short of a ton which would have been thoroughly deserved with the way he played, 92 not out though a great effort. This left the 2s on 255-7.
After a short tea break the 2s took to the field knowing that the pitch was good to bat on and that Knebworth were capable of scoring a total as they had done against us earlier on in the year. It was Winners and Badshead who took the new ball with the former striking in the first over, well clung onto by the skipper at first slip. Shortly later Ben (cheesestrings) Adshead picked up his first scalp with one that kept low and skidded onto off stump and then the Saints began to get on a bit of a roll. Winners picking up 2 quick wickets was onto the 3fer he knows all too well. It was written in the stars that he was finally going to get the first 4fer onto the website. With the final ball of his 10 over spell the finish line was in sight for Winners and the edge was drawn. Sadly the ball went down behind the stumps and the website won’t be getting the update Winners had hoped for. Another wicket was picked up by Adshead soon after leaving Knebworth 30-5 and surely out of the game. The introduction of D. Rosson and Broxton put Knebworth comfortably behind the run rate and just before drinks Rosson struck with a caught and bowled massively to his surprise. Following a catch up with the yellows at drinks the crowd that was growing in size were treated to 2 moon balls from Rosson but at the other end Broxton was taking the crowd from one extreme to another by bowling bouncers at the Knebworth number 8 who’d been trying to send every ball he’d faced into orbit. It was left to Broxton and Hounslow to finish off the Knebworth batting lineup. There was a small cameo from the number 9 but other than that there was little damage to the score. Hammer picking up 2 wickets to go with his 90 runs and Broxton with the other. Knebworth 126 all out.
This was another superb team performance and an important win. Standout performances from Hounslow, Howeson and Winfield. This means with 3 games to go promotion is certainly in our hands.
