Berkhamsted II v St Albans Cricket Club 2XI on Sat 24 Apr 2021 at 12:00pm
St Albans Cricket Club Lost 54 runs

Match report The beautifully serene setting of Berkhamsted CC played host to the 2s for their second of three pre-season friendlies; and after grinding out a win in our last outing within half the prescribed overs for a days play, this week was an opportunity to get some more time out in the middle under all of our belts.

A bowler-heavy St. Albans side started the day out in the field, with Tom Broxton and Utti ‘Genger’ Vijender bowling tidy opening spells which were unfortunate not to bare fruit. 1st changes to the attack, Dan Baylis and Amit Rajani, both made breakthroughs. Amit bowled tidy in-swinging lines, and Dan claimed scalps with a pair of fast full deliveries - one of which took middle stump, with the other taking their opening batsman’s big toe, who duly had to take an extended break from play for ice pack application. (He eventually did return, so it was good to see that half of his season isn’t over with a broken toe before it’s started). Wicket taking contributions followed from Zach Tarrant and Sam Davey, and the bowling in large part from the 2s was on the mark.

The Berkhamsted side went about their innings quite well. They ran between the wickets aggressively, and supported their young No.3 to a well taken 100 - after which there was little resistance following his retirement.
St. Albans could and should have been able to keep the total below the 200 mark, given a few less drops - and a lot less extras, which were largely due to the incompetent stand in Wicketkeeper. No names mentioned, bar Jimmy Rosson’s, who elected said stand in with full unwavering confidence. Beers are owed.

The 2s started their chase of the 245 run total in solid fashion, with Ash Dean and Charlie Parkinson seeing off the majority of their opener’s spells. 49-0 off of 15 overs laid a good foundation for a chase attempt, which we would be well served to take note of for the season ahead. Charlie and Humayune both contributed 16 runs a piece, and Ash went to a well taken half century, finishing with 52.
Zach West and Tarrant rotated the strike well for a brief period, before Amit came to the crease, with him and West taking the spinners on well and scoring fluidly. The chase became further out of reach following the fall of Amit, and the reintroduction of their openers only compounded this - with wickets falling at regular intervals thereafter.
Sam Davey found the boundary well at the death, and Zach West reached his half century driving well over extra cover, finishing unbeaten on 55*.

The 2s did eventually succumb to defeat after batting the full 45, finishing with 189-9. Despite the loss, there were lots of positives to take and it could very well have been a different outcome on the day - with both our batting and bowling performances showing few flaws. Good effort lads.
On to the next one, with a return to CP and an opportunity to gain some momentum in our last friendly fixture before the league season gets underway on May 8th.
