St Albans Cricket Club 4XI v Abbots Langley 3XI on Sat 04 Jun 2022 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report St Albans win by 5 wickets, with a very solid all round team contribution.
Notable performances: Sam Street not out 68, Jame Speller 3 for 14

As the last of the rain showers finished at 12, there was still dampness in the wicket as the toss was won by skipper Winfield and decided to bowl first in what he hoped would be favourable bowling conditions.
New bowl duties were given to Khatavkar and Button who both found some favourable assistance in the wicket, beating the bat on a number of occasions, but the opening Abbots batters took an aggressive approach to anything off line, scoring at over 4 an over. Button then took the decisive first wicket with an edge that was snaffled behind by Moksy, the first of his 4 catches and then proceeded to bowl the other opener and completed his 8 over start with a very tidy 2 for 22.

First change bowlers Arif and Winfield had to contend with Abbots number 3 bat, who both played some very wristy and stylish shots through midwicket and long on, dealing mainly in 4s. He was finally outdone by Arif and caught behind by Mosky trying one to many shots and this was quite pivotal to the next passage of play. At the other end Winfield removed the other dangerous bat and allowed Saints to exert control over the run rate as Abbots were 90 runs at the drinks break. Winfield completed his 8 over spell for 3 for 30 and could have been more but for the second time in the innings the batter played on to the wickets and failed to dislodge the bails!

Speller and Desphande came on to complete the bowling. Speller bowled with good rhythm, line and flight often beating the bat and ended the Abbots innnings when he had no 10 bat stumped by Moksy with a fine return of 3 for 14 from his 6 overs and Abbots finished on 140 all out. This was a good effort by Saints in the field, good chat and very few errors, when at times it seemed a 160 plus score was likely. Winfield was ably assisted by Najib Khan in field field settings and tactics.

With a target of 141 for victory and the pitch drier in the sun, expectations were high that Saints could chase this down. Grant and Dean opened the batting and faced some surprisingly quick pace by Abbots, who extracted some lift and made batting tricky at times. Grant missed a straight one and was gone for a duck and was replaced by Street. Dean and Street played very controlled and solid cricket, looking for quick singles, taking on the odd loose ball and remained very solid in defence and completed a valuable partnership of 48, which saw off the better Abbots bowlers and Saints were 62 for 2 at drinks, needing another 79 runs in the second session, but with wickets in hand.

Dean fell for 27 as he tried to up the run rate and was joined by Khan who played his customary wristy shots, not letting the bowlers settle and was out for a quick 19 runs. Moksy briefly appeared and found a loopy leggy to face which he duly dispatched for 4 and then a huge 6 straight into the car park, hitting the oppos captain car, but luckily just missing Winfields'! At the other end Street looked very composed and started to unfurl a number of very handsome shots, picking up the run rate and never really looking troubled as he remained undefeated on 68 not out and what was to be the defining innings to ensure a Saints victory with 3 overs to spare and a 5 wicket win.

Another 30 points and next week we face the undefeated league leaders Broxbourne and a team capable of winning.
