St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Old Cholmeleians II on Sat 14 May 2022 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report On their report to Sandpit Lane, the Threes secured a good victory to open their account for the 2022 season.

Under blue skies, the coin fell on to a dry looking wicket the wrong side up, and so St Albans were asked to field first by Old Cholmeleians.

From the first over, Joey Curran bowled with good pace and regularly challenged the batter's outside edge. At the other end, Winfield was able to find movement through the air, which the openers respected - until Winners (1/17) slipped one through the defences. Curran was unlucky to go wicketless across his eight overs, too good at times, and seeing one chance, to slip, go down.

At the halfway point, Old Cholms had reached 63/2, with a partnership building. A pair of quick wickets fell shortly thereafter, to Walker (3/30) and Davey. Dangerous opener Neal, with 10 boundaries to his name, was then caught around the corner to give Saints the advantage at 96/4.

Things did not quite go to plan thereafter, with some of the bowling losing its way, and the batsmen taking a positive approach that came off. Perhaps the field settings could have been managed better? Church, however, kept things going at the top end, completing seven death overs for 2/23.

Old Cholms wound up with 178/9 from their 40 overs, perhaps 30 more than they should have had. On a day when the umpires punished anything wide, second top scorer was extras (31). With a few chances going down in the field, this was not quite the performance of the week before, but still a decent effort, in front of some welcome Saints supporters.

It felt like the momentum was with the visitors, and after two early wickets, there was more concern at the scorer’s table.

However, with no further wickets achieved, the opening bowlers were spelled, and the game shifted a little. First change bowler Masih’s first delivery was a legside full toss that Law had no trouble dispatching over the short boundary. Not helping matters was an injury to one of the change bowlers, and it was apparent that this stretched OC’s resources a bit too far.

Still, Saints had work to do. Dean, though struggling with his timing, looked solid. Law was cautious, with the Sandpit Lane wicket offering enough variability to create doubt in any batter’s mind, yet punished anything loose. And there were enough loose deliveries to allow the runs to keep flowing.

By drinks (sorry, guys, only water on offer today), 101 runs were left in the chase. A little later, Dean was out for 25, tickling behind, to end a partnership worth 75. Old Cholms still had a sniff of victory, but then Melling found his rhythm with some positive shots, to ensure that Saints did not lose their advantage. A mix up lead to an unfortunate run out, which brought Caley to the crease, and the run countdown to victory was quickly ticked off.

Throughout all of this, Law stood tall, and finished the game with a well timed clip off the pads over the mid wicket boundary, taking him all the way to 87. Watchful in defence, but powerful in attack, Law hit five maximums in what was, by some margin, the innings of the day.

Chasing a decent score to achieve victory is always satisfying, and Saints were pleased to take the W back to Clarence Park. 2022 felt like it was properly under way now.
