St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Aldenham on Sat 28 May 2022 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 143 runs

Match report The Threes were back at Sandpit Lane this week, and seeking a win after a stuttering start to the season. Their opponents, Aldenham, arrived undefeated.

For once, Walker won the toss, enabling Saints to bat first, with a much-changed lineup that held a few aces.

The visitors began well with the ball, finding some extra bounce at times, but generally attacking the stumps. Dean and Rudlin were watchful, with the former the first to go, LBW. Runs continued to be hard to come by, and when Law’s defences were breached, the Threes were 2/27 after 14 overs. Crucially the opening bowlers had been seen off by this point.

The arrival of Ralfe at the crease brought a new complexion to the game, as he quickly found his rhythm, striking the ball hard and for the most part along the ground - aside from one flicked six that sailed beyond the leg side boundary. It was a shame to see him fall for 27, perhaps getting a little greedy in his quest for runs. Murray came and went, as did Caley, who looked to have found his touch with four well placed boundaries.

Through this all, Rudlin had remained steadfast. O’Toole Sr now joined him and set about destroying the change bowling, scoring off just about every delivery, and with a fair share of boundaries amongst them. Having given Rudlin a 28 over start, it was O’Toole who raised the first half century of the day. Rudders, although outpaced, raised his own 50 in style, his pull shot carrying over the boundary for an uncharacteristic six.

Both batters perished shortly after, but a final over flurry from Rayden lifted Saints to a 40 over tally of 237. Over the last ten overs, 99 runs had been added. This finish was built upon the solid foundations laid at the top of the order, Rudlin’s knock of 67 invaluable.

Aldenham have a record of high scores, though much looked to depend upon skipper Munroe in what was a challenging target.

St Albans attack began with two different sides to it: Rosson, on return to SLCG, found a good line and length, and the first wicket. On the other hand, Davey, seemingly unsure how to use the new ball, wanted for control, but crucially picked up the opposition skipper for 22, in an over that read 44W444. One way or another, this game looked set for an early finish.

Having conceded 38 off his first three sets, Davey regained his poise to finish his eight overs with 3/47. Rosson chimed in with a very tidy 2/11. Saints were comfortably on top.

With Walker holding an end - 7 overs for 6 runs - Ralfe exhibited his other skill beautifully, spinning his way to four wickets. The fielding was by and large outstanding, with good catches from Rosson and Murray, a sharp run out from Rudlin, and tidy keeping from Rayden. Unsurprisingly Aldenham were bundled out for just 94.

Saints were deservedly pleased to pick up this win, a thoroughly professional performance that bodes well for the fixtures ahead. Better, the team returned to Clarence Park to share the rewards of a club clean sweep, five wins out of five.
