St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Watford Town III on Sat 13 Aug 2022 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets

Match report On the hottest Saturday of the summer, the Threes were at home to Watford Town’s own third XI, seeking to reverse the loss they suffered in the away fixture.

With the weathermen forecasting temperatures reaching the mid-30s, the League had offered teams the option of shortening games, starting early or extending the tea break. An uncomfortable day for players was ahead, no matter what. Losing the toss was not what the skipper wanted and Saints were in the field first.

Curran and Winfield started well but it was a sharp piece of fielding from Law, with a direct hit from extra cover, that brought the first wicket. As usual, Curran’s left arm zip was too good for the batters, and so went unrewarded. Glazier, looking to carry on his good form from the previous week, struck immediately.

An unusual stretch of play followed, with singles completely absent from the scorecard, the consequence being that Rosson bowled every delivery of his eight over spell to the same batter, one Imran Khan. Rosson’s spell was a masterpiece of control, with almost all runs conceded going through to third man, in what was quite a contest between bat and ball. Once again a great spell went unrewarded. Glazier finished with similarly economical figures and had two wickets to his name.

At the second drinks break - drinks every 10 overs was the one concession made to the heat - Watford Town were on 51/2. Unsurprisingly they looked to lift the rate thereafter with a couple of wayward overs helping out. Not for the first time, O’Toole made his presence felt, nabbing three wickets and keeping the visitors in check. Still, by the close of 40 overs Watford Town had reached 149, aided by a tally of 32 extras. Extras aside, Saints had done a pretty good job in the field.

Unfortunately the reply began with a very early wicket and a second followed in the seventh over. Lawrence and West, and then West and Glazier dug in for a time but no-one looked very comfortable at the crease, with the Watford Town bowlers doing the right thing. With some determined batting, West had held the innings together but the heat caught up with him, out for 39, a crucial contribution.

However a string of wickets left Saints at 7/83 in the 27th over. With the irrepressible O’Toole at the crease, the game was not done, but there was plenty of work to do. The 28th over yielded 14 runs, with three boundaries to O’Toole, reducing the target somewhat and reminding Watford Town that the game could slip from their grasp, too.

What was needed was a partnership, and in Walker, O’Toole found a willing co-conspirator. The run rate was manageable, and that allowed a little patience to wait for the loose ball, while scrambling for sharp runs whenever possible - no mean feat for this ageing duo. 29 was required off the last five overs, and when the 36th over went for 15 (aided by another four overthrows) that margin was halved.

From there, it felt like Saints had the game covered, and on the second ball of the 40th over, Walker’s inside edge onto pads allowed a scrambled single to be taken for victory. Walker, 26 not out, and O’Toole, 42 not out, had added 67 runs to achieve a hard fought win.

Returning - very late - to Clarence Park with a win meant that Saints had achieved another Saturday League sweep, something to be celebrated with a cool drink or two.
